Markel Canada Taps Berkeley’s Paris as VP, Product Line Leader – Primary Casualty

Markel Insurance, the insurance operations within Markel Group Inc., announced the appointment of Alain Paris as vice president, Product Line Leader – Primary Casualty, effective immediately.

Paris is responsible for leading the primary casualty product line across Canada, working closely with technical and field underwriting teams to deliver on established profit targets and support sustainable expansion. Markel said the product line leader role is integral to the insurer’s underwriting framework, ensuring alignment between field underwriting execution and strategic product direction

Paris’ appointment marks a significant step as Markel Canada continues to expand its capabilities and build momentum nationwide, the company said.

Parisbrings a wealth of experience in casualty underwriting and strategic portfolio management, having held leadership positions at several Canadian carriers. Most recently, he served as assistant vice president, Middle Market Casualty, at Berkeley Canada.

With more than 20 years of commercial underwriting experience, Parisbrings deep expertise across casualty lines, with a focus on product and participant liability, and general liability, umbrella, excess, and specialty covers, such as abuse liability, where Markel is a market leader. Having led strategies for global programs in manufacturing and specialty trades, he’s also worked closely with environmental lines to deliver tailored general liability solutions for environmental consultants and trades.

“We’re thrilled to welcome Alain to our Canadian leadership team,” said Cliff Laidlaw, senior vice president, Underwriting, at Markel Canada. “His proven leadership in the Canadian market and deep expertise in the casualty sector make him an exceptional addition to our product leadership team and the broader Markel organization.”
