A divided Michigan Senate has voted to stop Gov. Jennifer Granholm’s administration from instituting mandatory workplace ergonomics rules in the state.
But the 20-16 vote is unlikely to change much. The Democratic governor vetoed similar GOP-backed legislation in 2006.
The rules still are being worked on by the Granholm administration.
Business groups say mandatory ergonomics training and reporting would raise the cost of doing business at a time employers are struggling. Supporters of Michigan standards say ergonomics helps workers.
Ergonomics aims to limit injuries caused by heavy lifting, repetitive motion and awkward work positions.
Senate Republicans voted for the legislation. Democrats opposed it.
