Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker announced that the state has made a payment of more than $200 million owed to the Injured Patients and Families Compensation Fund (IPFCF).
The payment includes a $200 million transfer as well as a loss of earnings and interest of an additional $33 million for a total payment of over $233 million.
The state reached an agreement last month with the Wisconsin Medical Society over the final payment after the state Supreme Court ruled a year ago that the state had to pay the money back.
The patients’ compensation fund was raided under a bipartisan deal reached in 2007 with then-Gov. Jim Doyle and the Legislature.
The medical society successfully argued that taking the money from the fund used to help pay malpractice claims was unconstitutional.
“This is another step toward honest budgeting in Wisconsin,” Walker said. “With this payment, we are further restoring confidence in Wisconsin’s ability to manage its finances.”
