A Bettendorf company has been fined $35,000 for burning demolition debris and failing to properly dispose of asbestos.
The Iowa Attorney General’s Office says Rockingham-Lunex Co. and its owner, William Schmidt of Mount Pleasant, demolished two buildings at a former manufacturing facility in Bettendorf in March 2011 and improperly disposed of the waste. It also says the company did not have the buildings inspected for asbestos, notify the Natural Resources department of the demolition or hire a licensed asbestos contractor.
Rockingham-Lunex properly disposed of the debris after being notified of the violations.
A Scott County district judge levied the fine last week in response to a petition from the attorney general.
