More Fargo, North Dakota Properties Might Need Flood Insurance

August 22, 2012

Several thousand property owners in North Dakota’s largest city could fall under federal flood insurance requirements based on a preliminary new flood plain map for Fargo.

About 500 structures are affected by the current flood plain. Under the Federal Emergency Management Agency’s proposed update, at least 2,300 properties will be required to have flood insurance. And city engineer April Walker says as many as 5,000 more within 25 feet of the new flood plain also might have to have it, depending on mortgage lender requirements.

Officials from Fargo, FEMA and the National Flood Insurance Program have scheduled public meetings for Sept. 11 and 12.

Permanent flood protection projects in the Fargo area could make the flood insurance issue moot for many homeowners, but those projects are not yet finalized.
