I had never seen these ( lead a sheltered life) until they were launched over the campground at the FIREMEN’s Convention. They are beautiful in the night sky, but considering we don’t even light candles in our home, I was astonished anyone would manufacture or sell these. With the ongoing drought conditions, not just in the midwest, I just can’t imagine promoting at item like this.
These were NOT sparked by the movie Tangled! That is an insult to the Chinese Culture. These Lanterns were used more than just as an Event.. But a way to send for help. If you do not pay intention to the instructions written on the packaging.. yeah of COURSE their would be accidents. That is why it would be best if you go out to the country where their is little to no houses around, just the EARTH. Or find a lake to set these off over. They are NOT dangerous if done properly. The fireworks that we shoot off in the fourth of July is TEN times worse than these!
This sounds like an over-reaction by people that don’t understand. We had our annual ArtPrize in Grand Rapids, MI this September with a launch of 15,000 lanterns. These are not dangerous since they don’t come down until after the fire is extinguished. The fires mentioned in this article sound like they occurred because directions were not followed and the fires were before they launched the lantern. I just lost my garage and a 1980 porsche 911 due to one of these things landing on the roof of my garage. A wedding party launched over 100 of these into 5 MPH wind that night. So I say ban them now!
