An El Dorado, Kan., company has been ordered to pay $97,612 in restitution and a $10,000 fine for mishandling waste chemicals, U.S. Attorney Barry Grissom said. The company also must pay a $400 special assessment and serve three years on probation to include participating in a compliance and ethics program.
Integrated Plastic Solutions LLC, a plastics recycling company,, pleaded guilty to one count of unlawful storage of a hazardous waste. In its plea, the company admitted that from 2009 to July 16, 2013, the company knowingly stored hazardous waste without a permit at its facility in El Dorado. The waste included paints and solvents. Many of the chemicals were highly inflammable and subject to flash fire or explosion if not properly stored.
Co-defendants include: company owner Sean M. Riley, who previously was sentenced to 18 months on probation and restitution of $118,807, and company owner Brian J. Riley, who was sentenced to three years on probation and $118,807 restitution.
Grissom commended the Environmental Protection Agency and Assistant U.S. Attorney Alan Metzger for their work on the case.
