Ohio has launched a campaign to promote fire safety as cooler temperatures prompt more use of heat sources that can lead to blazes.
The state says fires have killed 97 people in Ohio so far in 2015. That’s 12 more than at this time last year. Ohio had a total of 115 fire deaths in 2014.
State officials are urging people to check their smoke alarms, practice escape routes and ensure that space heaters and other alternative heat sources are used properly and not left unattended or too close to furniture.
Fire Marshal Larry Flowers says it’s an old message but new level of partnership. The American Red Cross, Ohio’s Development Services Agency and the departments of aging, agriculture, commerce and public safety are assisting in the messaging campaign.
