I’m not sure ALL things marijuana are gross but just reading the names of the products for “medical marijuana” makes me suspect. Really people? Are we to take it seriously when you name your products like this?
I know that some low THC medical marijuana has been beneficial to a close relative. I also have a close relative that is falling apart because of marijuana use and his arguments are same as I read over and over again on this site about how safe it is and better than alcohol, etc. His latest argument is that it’s legal in most states and it wouldn’t be if it was that bad. I think people either want to make money off of marijuana or feel better about consuming it so they repeat the mantra in their minds so they feel better.

Perplexed, Big Pot is a powerful lobby now and like to spread misinformation about this most dangerous drug.

You’re right about that. It sounds as if people stand to make billions of dollars off of it. I was surprised that shops in one of the newest state to legalize were sold out the first day. I feel sure it wasn’t a bunch of people needing it for medicinal purposes standing in line to buy it.

Correct Perplexed. The pot heads are very eager to make mush out of their brains. Heavy use makes them scromit.

          Agent/Perplexed,

I agree that most people are either ignorant or unaware of its’ dangers, but shouldn’t it be up to the individual to decide whether they consume it or not? The market for MJ will be there regardless of legality, so why not try to regulate as much of that market as we can, and legally profit from it at the same time?
I am relating MJ to alcohol and cigarettes. People will ingest those products while being FULLY aware of their significant health risks and thousands of deaths involved with them each year. Why do you believe MJ should be treated differently?

Please respond with a stance where you cannot easily swap the word “cannabis” for “alcohol/cigarettes”? In other words, do not reiterate the long term negative impacts it has on cognitive function, etc since other substances are just as detrimental when abused or used long term. Not wanting to argue or turn to personal attacks, just genuinely curious about your perspectives. I would appreciate your response(s).

Your “personal responsibility” argument assumes most people know the dangers. They do not. (Google: Warn Your Children about Pot, a new book by former NY Times writer Alex Berenson, but only if you are an open minded person.)

Usage is up an estimated 50% in the past 10 years. More revealing: use is up significantly for those under 21, where the potential for damage to IQ and mental illness are much higher.

It is estimated that 70% of African Americans consume THC regularly. You think they know the dangers?

Comparing it to cigarettes completely misses the point: people know the dangers of cigarettes, the reason tobacco consumption has gone way down while pot use has gone way up.

Seriously dude? The first freaking thing he wrote was “I agree that most people are either ignorant or unaware of its’ dangers”

I’m very sorry to hear about your close relative who is falling apart, but his/her argument that “…it’s legal in most states and it wouldn’t be if it was that bad” is very shortsighted. To wit: nicotine.

But then he went on to compare it to cigarettes, DUDE. And EVERYONE knows the dangers of cigarettes.

            Craig,
My “personal responsibility argument” assumes that most people are unaware of marijuana’s dangers and health risks, just as yours does.
Also, I googled that book, read the synopsis and multiple reviews, some pro and some anti-weed. What I gathered is this:
Alex Berenson’s “Warn Your Children” is essentially an exercise in cherry-picking data and presenting correlation as causation. In other words, it’s just another opinion-based book with very particular examples that cater to his views. MJ may have contributed to these cases, I will not deny that, but there is no way to prove it was the sole reason or even the leading cause to their manic outbursts. I would need to read the book myself to fully form my own opinion, but that’s what I’ve gathered so far.
You also stated that MJ usage has increased 50%, well that should be a no-brainer. It is becoming legal in more and more places, which that percentage could only, logically, increase.
As for your claim that cigarette usage has decreased in the last few years may be true, usage of other tobacco/nicotine products, such as vapes, mods, and e-cigs have increased in the younger generations and is still, in general, one of the leading causes of death each year. And like you said, EVERYONE knows the dangers of nicotine, yet they still consume it. Why? Because it is simply their choice to do so.

Simpleton arguments. Tobacco use has gone way down over the past 20 years. Pot use has gone way up. Now, how does “personal responsibility” work into that? Because people know the dangers of one and not the other.

“Correlation as Causation”. The refuge of the irrational. You want “research” Mr. Science?
When police departments, mental health facilities, psychiatrists, and rehabilitation experts all report the SAME THING, you can take it to the bank, even if there is no “scientific proof”, and it is all anecdotal.
