Indiana Insurance Dept.: Childcare Facilities Not in Danger of Losing Liability Coverage

March 17, 2020

In response to concerns that have apparently been raised regarding the status of liability insurance coverage for facilities that provide services such as childcare and meals to the community, the Indiana Department of Insurance said such facilities would retain their liability coverage if they remain open during the COVID-19 pandemic.

“There is no reason to believe that any carrier would be or is denying coverage at this time,” the department’s announcement states.

“Insurance companies cannot cancel coverage without filing an endorsement change in the terms of the policy with the Department. Commissioner Stephen W. Robertson stated that the department will aggressively support those facilities if their commercial insurance carrier attempts to deny their liability insurance without approval,” the department said.

At this time childcare facilities that remain open and follow normal protocols for children who may become ill, are not currently in danger of losing their liability insurance, according to the department.
