Michigan Attorney General Sues State’s Blue Cross Health Insurer

By | October 8, 2026

The Michigan attorney general is suing the state’s Blue Cross Blue Shield insurance plan for alleged anticompetitive conduct, opening a new front in a long-running legal fight over the structure of Blue Cross plans.

The complaint says the company conspired with other Blue Cross plans to carve up territory and reduce competition, raising costs for state workers’ employee health plans. It also alleges that the arrangement created the same problems for Michigan consumers and businesses.

A representative for Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan had no immediate comment.

Blue Cross Blue Shield plans nationally have agreed to pay billions in settlements to resolve other allegations of anticompetitive arrangements.

The case is the state of Michigan v. Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan Mutual Insurance Company, 26-cv-13834, in the Eastern District of Michigan.
