Jay S. Wintrob has been appointed president of SunAmerica Inc., and will continue in his former role as chief operating officer for the company.

Meanwhile, Eli Broad, who had been chairman, chief executive officer and president, will continue as chairman and chief executive officer. In his new role, Wintrob will continue to provide policy and direction to the company, which earns fees or spread income on approximately $148 billion of retirement savings by serving two million American families.

Wintrob will also assume executive responsibility for the SunAmerica Financial Network and its 9,000 representatives. Wintrob joined SunAmerica in 1987 as assistant to the chairman and, later that year, was elected as a corporate vice president. He became senior vice president in 1989 and executive vice president in 1991. Wintrob was named vice chairman in 1995, elected to the board of directors of SunAmerica in 1997, and named chief operating officer in 1998.
