Travelers Joins in Neighborhood Revitalization Efforts

June 4, 2001

As part of Travelers Insurance’s continued effort to increase the availability and improve the affordability of insurance in urban areas, the company is participating in National NeighborWorks® Week (June 2-9)–a national celebration of community revitalization activities taking place in communities throughout America.

National NeighborWorks® Week is a celebration that marks the accomplishments of the NeighborWorks® network to revitalize distressed neighborhoods across the country. National NeighborWorks® Week provides the chance for NeighborWorks® organization employees, residents, and business people to join together working side-by-side to help rehabilitate homes, clean parks and residential areas, and build safe playgrounds.

Travelers is participating in Baltimore, Chicago and New York. In Baltimore, Travelers is a major sponsor of the Neighborhood Housing Services (NHS) of Baltimore’s “Let Your Light Shine” project –an anti-crime lighting project for the St. Joseph and Yale Heights neighborhoods. For the second consecutive year, Travelers is helping to fund the installation of rear porch lighting.

In addition, the Lambert Insurance Agency and the Manderson Insurance Services will be on hand to provide insurance evaluations to help ensure that homeowners have proper insurance coverage. Travelers is also a sponsor of the first National NeighborWorks(R) Week Community Fair in Baltimore on Saturday, June 2.

In Chicago, Travelers is working with the NHS of Chicago to provide free smoke detectors, information about protecting homes, and free safety inspections to homeowners in the Back of the Yards neighborhood on Saturday, June 2. Homeowners who request a safety inspection will also receive a free fire extinguisher.

In addition, Travelers and Citibank, both members of Citigroup, are providing volunteers to gut a home for rehabilitation, build a community garden, and landscape a rehabilitated property. Neighborhood Housing Services of Jamaica, New York, and Travelers are working together in an outreach program called “Adopt a Senior.” This initiative, being held on June 8, will provide home repairs and beautification to properties owned by elderly couples.

Travelers’ stated that its participation in NeighborWorks® Week is another example of its commitment to underserved markets, complementing its already successful Urban Markets program. That program is a multi-faceted strategy geared to increasing the access to and sales of insurance in urban markets. It includes training, mentoring and appointing urban agents; supporting the establishment of MGAs to provide smaller agencies with access to Travelers products; and supporting community activities aimed at increasing home and business ownership.
