AICPCU Ethics Workshop Materials Available Online

February 23, 2004

Don’t forget … March is Ethics Awareness Month (EAM) and the American Institute for CPCU has developed a PowerPoint presentation to complement its “Street-Level Ethics” workshop. The PowerPoint presentation expands the workshop materials, which the American Institute introduced last March for EAM 2003. All of the complimentary materials for “Street-Level Ethics” are now available at www.aicpcu.org.

The American Institute funded the creation of the “Street-Level Ethics” workshop, which was developed by Chris Amrhein, AAI, a veteran insurance industry speaker, consultant and training material developer.

The ethics materials consist of the following: (1) Facilitator’s Guide, (2) “Street-Level Ethics” Outline, (3) Ethics Case Studies, (4) PowerPoint Presentation, and (5) Canons and Rules of the Code of Professional Ethics of the American Institute for CPCU.

The “Street-Level Ethics” workshop was originally developed to enable CPCUs to conduct an effective chapter meeting on ethics in the property/casualty insurance business. Insurance company education directors, providers of ethics training, and others, however, have requested to use the workshop materials in their presentations. For that reason, the American Institute is making the workshop available on the Web to facilitate its use by all interested industry practitioners. The American Institute requests only that users give credit to the American Institute and to Chris Amrhein as the developers of the materials.

In an overview of the ethics workshop, author Amrhein wrote, “These materials are not intended to be the final word on creating ethical behavior in insurance practitioners, but rather to serve as an introduction to the ‘street-level’ application of what are often seen as esoteric topics. The main objective is to lead the workshop participants to start ‘wading into the pool’ of what constitutes an ethical dilemma.”

Before becoming a consultant, Amrhein spent seven years as a life-health and then property-casualty agent. He also served more than 20 years as a full-time educator/VP-education for the Florida Association of Insurance Agents and VP-education for the Independent Insurance Agents and Brokers of America.

The American Institute for CPCU, the CPCU Society, The American College, and the Society of Financial Service Professionals founded Ethics Awareness Month in 1990.
