In the short time I’ve been an insurance reporter, I came to respect Mr. Mangan’s work in Insurance Journal. Of course he will be missed sorely by the people who loved him, but I will miss seeing his byline in our magazine and reading his articles.
I join Joe’s many friends in expressing sorrow at his untimely passing. Over the 15 years that we were frinds, I came to know Joe as a man of strong conviction and loyalty. He also was a great raconteur. Many who knew him may not be aware that he had a distibnguished military record for his service in the U.S. Army in Vietnam.
During my more than 15 years writing about insurance and in PR I had many instances to have contact with Joe. In fact, our paths crossed while we were both working for A.M. Best. I’ve never met someone more knowledgable about insurance than he, and found him to be kind and a gentleman in all our interactions. To his surviving relatives, I am so very sorry for your loss.
I’ve been reading, learning, enjoying for several decades — as long as I’ve subscribed to Insurance Advocate.
I am grateful for his efforts, and will miss the column.

Joe and I were not related (well, maybe in Ireland), but we spoke on occassion.
Where can I send condolences ?

I never met or spoke to him, but I always read his articles in the Insurance Advocate. They were the very best. I am very sorry to hear that he died.

What a great man. I learnt so much from him.
The industry has lost a true character.
