January 7, 2005

Marsh & McLennan Companies Inc. has named E. Scott Gilbert to the newly created position of senior vice president and chief compliance officer of the company.

Gilbert’s appointment is effective Jan. 24, 2005. He will be responsible for supervising and implementing MMC’s compliance policies and programs on a global basis and will report to Michael G. Cherkasky, president and chief executive officer of MMC.

Gilbert joins MMC from the General Electric Company (GE), where he was chief compliance counsel. His principal responsibilities at GE included preventing compliance problems by designing and implementing company-wide compliance systems, coordinating GE’s response to significant compliance issues by leading and supervising internal investigations, and managing litigation related to compliance issues.

“We are pleased that Scott will be joining our senior management team. He helped GE become a world leader in compliance and has had extensive experience in the public sector as an Assistant U.S. Attorney,” Cherkasky said.

Prior to joining GE in 1992, Gilbert served for five and a half years as an Assistant U.S. Attorney in the Southern District of New York, where he conducted a broad range of prosecutions, including RICO and securities fraud trials, and served on the Securities and Commodities Fraud Task Force investigating criminal violations of federal securities laws.

Gilbert, 49, is a graduate of Harvard College and received his J.D. from Harvard Law School. He is a frequent lecturer on internal investigations and compliance programs.
