PIA Names Eppstein as Director of State Affairs

The National Association of Professional Insurance Agents (PIA) has named David M. Eppstein Director of State Affairs. In his new position, he will be working with the National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC), the National Conference of Insurance Legislators (NCOIL) and other national policy organizations that address insurance legislation and regulation.

Eppstein comes to PIA from his previous position as a counsel to the House Committee on Financial Services, where he participated in the drafting of legislation and the selection of witnesses for hearings. Prior to joining the Committee staff in 2001, Eppstein was Legislative Assistant to Rep. Robert Ehrlich (R-Maryland), who is now the Governor of Maryland; and a legal intern in the office of House Committee on Financial Services Chairman Michael Oxley (R-Ohio).

“We are pleased that David Eppstein will be joining the staff of PIA National and using his unique talents, expertise and developed contacts to benefit the members of our association,” said PIA National Executive Vice President and CEO Len Brevik.

A member of the Ohio State Bar, Eppstein obtained his Bachelor of Arts degree with a major in political science from Ohio State University; a Juris Doctor from Cleveland-Marshall College of Law; and a Masters of Laws degree in international environmental law from George Washington University in Washington, D.C.

Eppstein will develop working relationships among PIA state and regional affiliate staff counterparts and lobbyists, coordinating common PIA policy, positions and actions.

Additionally, PIA announced the appointments of two new legal project interns, Tonio D. DeSorrento and Jason Baum.

DeSorrento is pursuing a law degree at Georgetown University in Washington, D.C. A graduate of the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland and Cameron University in Lawton, Oklahoma, DeSorrento served a six-year stint in the United States Marine Corps, achieving the rank of Captain. Baum is pursuing his law degree at American University in Washington. D.C. He earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in political science from the University of California at Santa Barbara.

Founded in 1931, PIA is a national trade association which represents member insurance agents and their employees who sell and service all kinds of insurance, but specialize in coverage of automobiles, homes and businesses. PIA will celebrate its 75th anniversary in 2006.
