CSX should exit the railroad business and go into fast food or something else that requires little investment, few employees, and maximum profit for not much of value. Railroads often forget they exist to provide “transportation”, not “railroad business”. CSX doesn’t even want to run trains much anymore. The number of trains on the once busy upstate NY mainline is about half what it was a few years ago because they have lost so much business and have chosen to reject business they do not wish to handle. Norfolk Southern seems to have an attitude of taking any business that they can move and have a great safety record. And although stockholders are part of the equation, it seems that at CSX, all that matters to them is pleasing the stockholders, even if it is done via diminished business expenses accomplished by driving away business and conducting less business.
