There were two postings before you put up your asinine post wanting to limit fee speech. Which of these post do you feel contained \”swear words\” or anything inappropriate to be posted? Do you think someone\’s opinion should not be posted?

    Dirk,

I\’m at a loss to understand why you think anyone is trying to limit free speech. Rob expressed the opinion that IJ was exposing itself to ridicule by allowing certain comments to remain on the message board. I won\’t speak for him, but perhaps he thought the intellectual quality of some of the comments was so low and embarrassing that the best business decision IJ could make would be to remove them. It\’s like when FoxNews.com edits the transcripts of the O\’Reilly Factor whenever O\’Reilly says something he shouldn\’t have. Does that mean they\’ve restricted his free speech rights? Of course not. They\’re making a business decision to limit the damage caused by the actual remarks.

I recommend you reread the posts. Nowhere did anyone say IJ should limit anyone\’s free speech (as if they could).

I take a week to travel with my partner, and I come home to THIS! I wonder how Curious George and crew will respond to their own people warning about the cost of global warming? Probably by having Alberto Gonzalez fire the people that wrote this report too!

It is a business, those caving into it are fools. There is nothing that has happened in the past 20 years that has not happened before in history. As for Global Warming, this has been the coldest winter in years. Also, the loose screws on the left thing the ice is melting in the north, check out this article on how two vessels are stuck up in Canadian waters……….

I appreciate the spirit of community dialogue, but the editors have a responsibility to moderate/delete the inappropriate comments…and no one is doing that. Moderate or shut down the comments area for the sake of your reputation.

Because if I were a competing on-line news service, blog, newsletter seeking out limited advertisers…I\’d just point prospects to these comment threads as a showcase of your audience.

I can tell you from first hand experience that they do monitor this site. They are a bit slow to yank inappropriate postings. I\’ve seen entire threads disappear from this site but as long as the conversations don\’t get too far out of hand, they let the comments stand.

My other suggestion is that if you don\’t like the comments that are posted, you could go to the other sites…

    OK everyone, stay calm, the Inconvenient Truth is inconvenient, there isn;t one shred of scientific evidence that proves all of us bad folks are ruining mother earth, and the real scientists have sufficient evidence to prove it. But, look at the pork barrel;

This ezine prints what they think if important, this isn\’t, so give them another chance, maybe they\’ll see the light, ice caps, no caps…whatever.

Listen, it\’s their reputation, and I hope you are right. These threads don\’t do anything to promote the IJ brand…it isn\’t like we got anyone debating the merits…quite the opposite.

    Rob,

I can tell you that on some topics you get the political debate that sometimes boarders on the obsurd.

But for most topics you do get some lively debate from people within the industry from all sides, agents, carrier empolyees and you can learn a lot.

I take some of the threads with a grain of salt and hold out for the more informative posts. But sometimes I can\’t jump into the pool and throw a few insane posts…

Don\’t give up on the IJ.

This from Boston Globe 04/22/2007. The article discusses future construction projects for the state of Mass.
    http://www.boston.com/news/local/articles/2007/04/22/mass_steps_up_climate_rules_for_developers/

Quote form the article fifth paragraph, first sentence \”As a policy change, the measure goes into effect immediately, and requires no legislative approval.\”

Thats right comrades, no debate no nothing, because we said so. Thats because we(the state) know what\’s right for you. And disagreeing is not an option. I did miss the part in the article where the supreme court has outlawed water vapor.

Thanks Bulldogg, I won\’t give up, just concerned for IJ, a resource I value.

And for Mary B & Rick, IJ is a for-profit company that obviuosly believes a lively comment section within their headlines feature is revenue generating (e.g. – more click-throughs to the advertisers).

Perhaps you could explain how a private website and comment feature has anything to do with your constitutional rights? It isn\’t like you people aren\’t entertaining enough already…but your response is welcomed.

Looks buds, this is not your website (as you clearly imply). Rick is right, why don\’t you believe free speech? Are you so insecure in your viewpoints that you cannot defend them? Someone who is secure and solid in their beliefs would welcome debate. No doubt you are left wing, as all left winger would love to shut down GOP voice. Have you notice, Republicans never mention one word about shutting down speach? Why is it a such a task for your side to defend their positions? Why do you make us look so good by wanting to shut down our voice? Huh???

    Dirk,

Rob\’s point was that what passes for debate in these comments sections rarely rises above the \”what communist country are you left-wingers from\” type of name-calling, with all the misspellings that you would expect from people who are limited to that debate style. This isn\’t a place for debate. It\’s a place for comments. No one\’s trying to supress free speech. But some people should consider the adage, \”I would rather be silent and thought a fool than speak and remove all doubt.\”

Huh? That is a long sentence with very poor structure. Don\’t you edit your posts before you allow them to go live? Perhaps you should not post if you are going to make a fool out of yourself.

Nobody is trying to supress free speech? Let me better understand the first post…

\”but the editors have a responsibility to moderate/delete the inappropriate comments\”

\”but the editors have a responsibility to moderate/delete the inappropriate comments\”

\”Who is to define what is appropriate or inappropriate?\”

The answer is in the line you quoted. That\’s why this has nothing to do with free speech. This web site is a private enterprise and its editors can choose to provide a forum for debate or one for entertainment. They\’ve chosen entertainment. Inappropriate is far more entertaining.

\”What country are you from again?\”

The best one in the world.

I don\’t think you should be allowed to post anymore dubya….who in the hell I am I to say that? Sure the editors can do what they want, but they aren\’t. If they wanted to, they would have done this long ago. What if the pulled your post because they felt that your post was inappropriate, would you be okay with that? Would you be okay if they allowed for a one sided debate? Is this what you are asking the editors? The editors put out their magazine based on free speech, you think they want to be hypocrites?

Funny you should mention it. One of my posts did get pulled. It turned out I was debating someone who worked for IJ, and he decided it was easier simply to cancel my post than to attempt to refute it. I called them on it, because it was done on a whim, not because it was inappropriate.

I\’m not quite sure what your point is. I\’m not asking anyone to be one-sided. If you\’re not clear on the distinction between speech that is constitutionally protected and that which is not, I recommend you Google \”free speech.\” If you think \”free speech\” means IJ is required to publish comments that include swear words or other content they deem inappropriate, inane or embarrassing, you are simply wrong.

If you were the editor, tell me which posts you feel have no place on this board. Please list the author\’s name and time posted. Since you brought this up, you must have some posts in mind. I will not expect you to come through on this because I know you would never want to admit your true intent. You may also reply and say it is not you job to edit this board. Well if that is true, why would you even suggest this to the editors?

There is no need for a long post trying to make my case again. Dubya did a great job for me. Thanks.

IJ has competition for ad revenue (PCI Newsbrief, INN, et al) and if IJ is happy to be the home of right-wing big mouths, so be it. I can promise my company won\’t be buying ad space here until this silliness stops.

As Instapundit and many others on the right of our political spectrum now realize, comment areas are only as useful as the comments within. Which of course, is why so many of them don\’t offer them.

    Have a great day everyone…

Rick, I would love it if people would read the story and offer opinion or analysis. But that isn\’t occurring.

Instead we get (for example) posts #1 & #2 which are typical of the discourse that occurs so regularly on these IJ stories.

Once again, it is my opinion IJ risks credibility and ad revenue by allowing comments not cogent to the story.

Frankly, I don\’t think Dubya and I can be any clearer for you…comments which have nothing to do with the story should be moderated or deleted in our opinion. Further, I would like to see some active engagement by a moderator on these threads in active discussion with those commenting. I enjoy IJ products…and that is why I feel an obligation to engage you, the others, and hopefully the editors in this discussion.

for letting people who have different opinions post their thoughts here. I enjoy reading different perspectives without thought police editing ideas I may
not at first agree with. The best way for IJ to negatively influence advertising dollars is to exclude those folks who may have their own idea about how to use the comment section. How else would I know how others feel across the country, not just about insurance, if I couldnt read postings here?

Rick, I\’m not sure I understood your latest query, but let me be clarify once again.

I am appealing to the editors of this site to moderate and/or delete posts which are not related to the article. I\’m not demanding, quite the opposite, rather I\’m suggesting that very nature of these unrelated posts will, eventually, make the IJ Insurance Headlines service unattractive to potential advertisers. Better yet, I would like to see active involvement by moderators who could challenge posters regularly. This isn’t censorship, but even if it was, what could we do about it…it’s a private website. Rick, what I’m suggesting is regularly occurring on website and forums all over the internet and for good reason…it makes good business sense. (see Washington Post which has well documented history of comment thread management).

You might think I\’m wrong on this point, and that’s fine. But I think I’ve been pretty clear and consistent.
