I can’t decide which of my pets is worth the most but I do know they are worth at least $5000 each. Of more interest is how the value will be determined. Was the injured animal a purebred and was it nuetered. If an adjuster ever thought determining the value of an auto was tough in the mind of the claimant here is a new level of negotiation. Will replacement animals be offered? There simply isn’t enough space to pen all of my thoughts. Foolish me as I thought we were in a soft market. We must be in a REALLY soft market. This is the type of stuff that I think would best be announced on an April 1st.
This is a smart marketing ploy, how often will an animal be hurt in a car accident? And then they only pay $500? Thats nothing compaired to the pub they will get.
Great, now I can get paid for that damn cat with a death grip on the back of my neck in the car taking her to the vet & I run into a tree ’cause I am in so much pain & can’t see. What will they think of next?
I’ve always wondered this. First party is me. It’s first party if I do something to myself. Third party is someone else. Someone else does something to me. What’s second party? Would that be the dog?
If you have an adopted pet from a shelter, or another pet whose purchase price new was less than $500.00, and it it suffers fatal injuries in an accident, would Progressive automatically pay $500.00, or would they pay you the LKQ price of $50.00 (shots only)?
What if the animal survives, but the medical bills are $400 or so, and the replacement cost of a half-breed is less than $100.00? Would they pay $100 or $400? In other words, would the animal be considered a total loss?
Pet people will spend huge amounts of money on their pets. Two years ago we spent $1,500 on radiation treatment on a 15 year old cat. Anything you can do to drain money from us stupid pet owners is pure profit. Pet anything can be sold. Why not this? My cats are dead so I am out of the market.
For the safety of you, your cat and everyone else on the road, practice a little loss control, and invest in a pet carrier !
As to the valuation questions that have been posted, this should be nothing new to adjusters, as it said in the article, insurance now covers them for third-party liability, which makes sense, since they are legally considered property.
I don’t understand paying this under Collision, as it violates the principle of “if you want to insure something, buy the proper type of policy” A pet is not part of the auto, it is personal property.
Collision coverage wouldn’t cover a laptop computer, a piece of furniture, etc. so it just isn’t logical to cover the pet.
I am glad for those that benefit from this marketing gimmick but just saying it doesn’t follow established principles of insurance.
Here’s another interesting item regarding pet coverages. AAA (the auto club) Members get a free Prescription Savings card that you can use at Walgreens, WalMart, Target, and KMart pharmacies. No deductible, and savings range 20-33%. The “little known” item…you can also have PET prescriptions filled at these locations, and receive the AAA discount pricing!
Goes along with your Blue Paw. I had a girlfriend once that wanted to get Blue Paw for her dog. Interesting idea since pet health can cost a whopping sum of money if they get sick.
Thank you kindly Second Party.

What is the average deductible???? 500.00
I love cats, dogs and animals as much as the next person but this is simply ridiculous. What’s next?

Lastbat, you are not off topic, the second party is the insurance company.

and, would I be able to keep salvage on him if I brand his title?
If my dog is in the accident and dies, will Progressive pay for taxidermy to stuff him?
It would be paid for in hard cash. Sorry Fluffy, couldn’t resist.

If my animal is inuredin the loss can I claim dimunition in value of the animal? Kidding but it’s possible someone will try it.
Rick, only when the dog’s driving.
Does this cover the pet even if they’re sticking their head out the window??
Curious……ouch, but interesting point.
