The only problem that I have with this is the “forgiving the $17 billion debt”. Nobody else can run a household like this.

We (as a nation) need to become fiscally responsible!

If they don’t forgive the $17B, won’t all of our flood premiums go up?

Sorry, but the gov’t that hands out money to airlines, mortgage companies, and Bear Stearns to save their collective billion dollar rear ends can spare a few to help out the little guys (meaning policyholders).

IF they didn’t bend over backwards and hand out money to the big businesses when they’re stupid, I’d feel differently. I resent them helping (rewarding) the 8-figure income CEO’s for being stupid. But if that’s how the boys in the club play, the very least they can do is help keep at least something (meaning flood premiums) from tripling on the ones that can’t afford to ‘buy in’.

I’m sorry but forgiveness is altogether wrong, and let’s not lower ourselves to say well if they did it for them so I want mine too game. We need to restore fiscal discipline and people pay the bill for protection.

You have got to be kidding with that note.”Our” flood premiums is a good analogy. I don’t own a home on a flood plain, yet I am buying flood insurance for dinbats like you who feel that if they aren’t ripping off the taxpayers like everyone is trying to do, then you ain’t living. If you can’t afford the premiums, MOVE TO HIGHER GROUND.Get some common sense and get your hand out of by taxpaying pocket.

Insurance coverage for catastrophe’s would require large premiums to offset large loses. The larger the premiums the lesser the impact of large loses. This would benefit the consumers in catastrophe pron areas.

Our industry is made up of Reinsurers and carriers who build their rates on Wind loses including cost of reinsurance and make their money on the investment float on those premiums.
It seems to me that our industry publicly complains about cost of reinsurance and cost of catastrophic loses. But privately needs them for their economic survival. Lets don’t pretend that we are looking out for the consumer in this area. We have a self interest and lets not complain anymore about catastrophic loses. We better be able to provide the coverage the consumer needs or the Government will have to.

Obviously, you didn’t read it all. I do live in a prime flood location, and I do have flood insurance. I’m just sick and tired of the gov’t bailing out their friends and letting the rest of us rot from their bad decisions.

If an 8-figure income CEO deserves the bail out, why don’t we?

People scream on this board when people in Fla complain about their premiums for wind, now you’re saying we should all have to pay higher premiums for Katrina?

But then if all you can do is call names, I guess expecting you to respect the fact that I am entitled to my opinion is asking WAY too much.

One thing I DON’T feel entitled to is paying triple premiums for Katrina. I get told repeatedly to shut up and pay up for my wind insurance in S Fla. by people just like you. You think La is going to pay up for the floods in Katrina? You want to, be my guest. I don’t want to pay for their floods anymore then you want to pay for my hurricanes.

So if it takes the Feds ‘forgiving’ the debt to keep me from having to pay it? GREAT. I’ll take it.

If you think I’m stupid for feeling that way, fine. Come on down and pay for my hurricanes while YOU’RE handing out the money.

And, BTW- if they’d stop bailing out their buddies that can’t ‘survive’ on 7 figure incomes, I’d stop making observations about it.

Trust me, I’m all for the government leaving us alone except for the necessities, like our borders, police, military, roads, etc…, not handouts. I’m definitely against corporate America ever getting bailed out. When one bank/mortgage company closes, another will open with much less fat. Just out of curiosity, Dawn bashers, how many of you have returned your Federal tax handout? Of course not, because everyone else got one. Enjoy your day and someone start a petition that we send to congress to never bail out corporations again. That would be a good start. Or better yet, maybe the 18 million illegal’s can pay off the $17 billion write off.

My Apologies, I didn’t mean to insult you. I understand exactly what you mean.

I normally just overlook bad manners (i.e. name calling) in general. My own personal perception is that most who engage in name calling normally were raised in a home environment as children where the parents didn’t teach their children manners and as adults just don’t give a care. They thereby appear to others as being rude, obnoxious, uneducated or suffering from mental illness as adults.

I don’t want to get involved in the name calling or receiving hand outs or the poor grammar that has taken place so far, however, I do think that most of the players so far have points of relevance.

I just moved to the Bowl of New Orleans for personal reasons. Frankly, I hate it here, but for personal reasons I will stay for the time being. Nevertheless, here are my very simple thoughts about the handouts.
    1. I live in a bowl. Should I pay higher insurance because of it? Yes.
    2. I am one of the responsible ones who has enough insurance in case I lose everything that I own. (Unfortunately it’s through Citizens because no one else is writing for the “common man’s life”, and the NFIP.) However, WHEN it happens again, should I and the other responsible people out there have to pay for those who are not responsible enough to protect themselves? I think not. That is the problem here and in other places, but there seems to be a disproportionate amount of irresponsibility here in NOLA.
    3. Does bailing out solve the problem? NO! Bailing out, just like the government is doing in NOLA just perpetuates and enables the irresponsibility that has caused this city to be where it is.
    4. I agree that it is wrong that the governmental decisions to bail out big corporations that pay 7 figure salaries to CEOs who wreck companies. I also agree that it’s wrong to make taxpayers pay for others’ irresponsibility. Children learn not to touch things that are hot by getting burned. How do we achieve fiscal responsibility if we don’t hold people accountable and stop rescuing them?
Being responsible is not cheap or easy all of the time. When do those of us who are going to get our reward? Until then, we should stop rewarding those who cannot force themselves to be more responsible.

But as for your comment, first we’d have to get them to stop bailing themselves out- out of jail, out of their golden parachute retirement plan, and get them out of their friend’s back pocket.

As long as they’re too busy scratching each other’s backs, all we’re going to get are the bills for it.

I’m all for getting the illegals to pay for it! That’s one reason I’m actually in favor of abolishing the IRS and charging a flat sales tax. That’s the ONLY way they’re even going to pretend to pay their own way.

And since it would include millions of our population that don’t currently pay taxes, it wouldn’t require a huge percentage. And the wealthy would pay more then their current 3% since they’d be paying the same sales tax percentage on their Ferrari that we pay on our Fords.

The only two groups that did not receive any money are the losers who don’t work and don’t pay taxes or one of the millionaire CEO’s that screwed over everyone else. Which loser are you? My guess is the first one as you are most likely standing in the welfare line right now collecting your check. 1. for having a small tool (your choose brain or penis).
    2. lack of education
    3. lack of breeding
    4. you suffer from mental illness or possible some type of nervious disorder where you lack self control
    5. other

Whichever it is, I’m sure you can find another website that would benefit you more then Insurance Journal. By the way, if you do find another site, the readers of this site would benefit too just by your lack of being.

Forgiveness = Increased Middle Class Taxpayer burden of $17 billion. Who lets these people get away with spending all my money and the $ of my children, grandchildren and great grandchildren while I am scrimping to buy gas?

Its too bad we have all become slaves to the corporate agenda ruining all of our financial futures! (Except the rich corporate elite of course). Ask yourself two simple questions; 1. Who is straddling the citizens of the US with all this debt? and 2. Who is going to pay these debts when they come due?

    Vote wisely.

Which Corporation(s) did you bring to the ground that us hardworking taxpayers had to bailout? That’s what I thought. None. Now get off your Parent’s computer, get a job, move out of their basement and then someday you may find someone that can put up with you and have a family. I am so sick of BIG business and Insurance companies, they make me sick! We are insured to death…literally! The big problem with insurance companies is it has become about massive profits and they are more concerned about how to NOT pay for claims whether it is auto, home, or medical. They no longer believe in what insurance is based on which is spreading the risk. Yes I live in Florida (not on the coast) and my rates are outrageous! I am sick of people saying they pay for me to live in Florida. Well what about all the tornadoes, mudslides, earthquakes, and other natural disasters that do NOT occur in Florida or hurricanes that damage property in other states? My in-laws live in Pittsburgh and they have had more damage from hurricanes where they live then I have ever had. As a matter of fact I have NEVER had an insurance claim on my home, yet in Pennsylvania, Tropical Storm Isabel passed through southwestern Pennsylvania, though its large circulation produced tropical storm force winds throughout much of the state. The passage of Hurricane Isabel resulted in $160 million in damage (2003 USD, $175 million 2006 USD) and 2 indirect deaths in Pennsylvania. Yet their insurance premiums in Pennsylvania aren’t even a quarter of what I pay in Florida. Another FACT is while Floridians pay more into the national flood plan we have one of the lowest claim totals…so are we subsidizing all of you that live in flood prone areas? Do you hear us *****ing about that, NO because it is called “spreading the risk”!

As for all the name calling on this site it is simply the rich (CEO”S and such) complaining about not making an extra billion off the backs of the poor by raping them with insurance! When did it ever become a “BAD” thing to help someone in need??? So what if you “gazzillionaires” have to pay a little extra to help people out. My husband and I make a good amount of money and we never complain about having to help out people by paying more. I guess our parents raised us better, with morals, compassion, and not to be greedy. Don’t worry folks those who are greedy will be judged in the end. Jesus said, “It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle, than for a rich man to enter into the kingdom of God”

I’m sorry, but Kathy you need to understand that Insurance Companies don’t make big profit, just compare the industry’s return on capital to any other industry and you find that the profits are paltry. Insurers have paid out more in claims and expenses than they collected in premiums during the past 25 years. This has not been a line of business that carriers have made any profit over time. Just show me any Homeowner carrier that has made an underwriting profit over the past 25 years, and you can’t.

Yes, I agree. The reality is, the current situation cannot be changed through normal voting channels (Joseph Stalin said “He who votes decides nothing; he who counts the votes decides everything.”). We don’t have any real leaders any more, they’re all just puppets. When the American people wake up and realize that they are taking it royally in the rear end, I fear it will be too late. No, the only solution at this point is a major revolution (Jefferson advocated a revolution every 5 years…which means we are about 225 years overdue). However, we are all lulled to sleep by the corporate media so any coverage of such event will be severely stifled.

America, land of the trivial, home of the slaves.
