No other immigrants from ANY other nationality ever received “special treatment” just because they “showed up in America”. Why is this country constantly bending over for Hispanics? Why should America cater to them just because they’re here? Once again, the focus is on the symptom not the cause. First of all, the ability to fluently speak the Kings English should be a REQUIREMENT of citizenship and/or a green card. If they can’t speak our language they’re a danger to themselves and others. Secondly, if they have no prior construction experience they should have to atted some type of training BEFORE they start working and making money to send back to Mexico. This country is losing it’s identity and is fast becoming nothing more than a campground for foreigners who have no interest in assimiliating and becoming AMERICAN. They act the same as they did in the old country, speak their native language, dress in their native garb, and eat their native food. I for one am tired of having to listen to their jibberish in public. It’s rude. I’m also tired of hearing what “we” have to do for “them”? As JFK said in his innaugural address “ask not what your country can do for you, but what you can do for your country”. Pose that one to Pancho and Juan and see what kind of answer you get.

Two separate issues. Safety and Immigration. Employers have a duty to property train and provide a safe working environment for everyone. They are also required to comply with statutes concerning the employment of illegals. Those employers who violate both requirements are no better than third world employers and should be put out of business.

Not having a good grasp of English can only be blamed on our founding fathers. The real problem is that this country has NO official language. Therefore you can not require new citizens to learn any specific language.

I also agree with Bob, there needs to be better training in the construction industry. Living in NYC with the rash of crane accidents it is evident that the construction industry needs to over haul it’s safety training and enforcement.

It wasn’t that long ago everyone spoke English, even if it was “broken English”. It was the de facto language of America. Those who emmigrated here may have spoken in their native tongue in their own home. You NEVER heard the Italians, Poles, Hungarians, or Russians babbling in their native language ad nauseum. They learned the language. The fact that so many have come here and essentially refused to learn the language is appalling an I agree with you, the government is to blame. The problem has become that so many are now here with no plans to assimilate, but with an expectation the country will adapt the them. I have to agree with Dread on this,.

I feel compelled to point out that nobody in America speaks the King’s Enlish. We just don’t. We speak American English.

This study should come as no surprise to anyone. Hispanics are over-represented in construction and construction has a high fatality rate. The bigger issue is not how to keep Hispanics safe, but how to make construction in general a safer industry.

Yea, type in Kings English into wikipedia. Kings English is a British term. As lastbat pointed out we speak American English.

Thats one of the problems with this country right now, a lot of Americans dont even understand little things like that.

Look back in history, when the Irish and Italians and many other immigrants first came here there were treated like crap by the “real Americans” that were already here.

They were discriminated against cause they didnt fit in or speak properly and they were called names like Patty. Thats no different than what people like Dread are doing now to the Mexicans.

It was wrong then and its wrongs now. First generation immigrants very rarely fit in well. Its often the second and third generations that finally assimilate.

So have a heart. I dont like smelly foreigners either, but at least do your best to understand the situation and have heart.

    Dread,

Spoken like a true American. I absolutely agree with your sentiment. But I’m not sure this is a Mexican issue. I think this a problem with the American culture of today caused by Liberalism. Liberals have convinced America that we have to help the underdog. If Capitalism truly flourished in American it would be survival of the fittest.

If a worksite cannot be safe unless the worker’s speaks and understands English then the worker should not be allowed to work on the worksite. The worksite should not be adjusted to accomodate the worker. Does this sound familiar? Americans with Disabilities? Are the unions allowing undocumented and English language illerates to join their membership? I doubt it? But the Unions have partially created this problem by creating an environment where companies look to cheaper labor (usually minorities and illegals).

I’ll step off my soapbox ’cause I could go on and on.

To compare Italians and Irish immigrants, who came here legally, with illegal immigrants from ANYWHERE, is wrong. To compare the late 1800’s early 1900’s with today is wrong. Most Americans don’t overtly single out mexicans to ostracize – instead, in this mixed up world of open US borders, we just wonder now if the mexicans we see in the emergency room, licensing department and job site are legal or not. I think that is worse than the turn of the century slur ‘patty’.

You can’t blame the problem of illegal immigration on Liberals, Sue. It was Reagan that granted the last amnesty. Both sides of the aisle have turned a blind eye to fixing the problem and instead focus on ways around the current situation.

Many Liberals try to make it a human rights issue while Conservatives try to make it a business viability issue. There is already an “allowed” number of illegals because Conservatives determined that some industries, agriculture especially, can’t survive without illegal labor. Try cracking down on them before taking a knee-jerk at Liberals.

I’m all for zero-tolerance. Deport every illegal and prosecute those that knowingly hire them. That will be a step toward solving the problem.

Why is it that any discussion of this type always leads to liberals labeling conservatives as KKK or Nazis? We generally believe that a country is not only entitled to protect it’s borders against unfettered crossing, that the government is required to do this. There probably are a lot of racists who want “those people” gone, whoever “those people” are, but most of us just want the millions who come here illegally to go back and try to get in legally. Don’t like the immigration laws? Change them. What does illegal mean to you Ivy? Do you only obey the laws that you feel good about?
