Wasn’t the unit everyone’s crying about based in London? Unles they’re US ex-pat’s I don’t think they’re really concerned about US taxes.
They weren’t performance bonuses, they were retention bonuses to keep staff on-board to run-off this junk. I have no problem with the concept, but the size of the bonuses is out of step with reality.
Was their some chance a competitor would snap up this “talent”, or was that what it took to delay them from early retirement in the Caymans?
Hey you aig d-bags, you just got poned.
Welcome to the real world, bonus = good job results not failure. Thats what you guys are, failures in not producing positive results and still expecting a pay day.
:)
I REMEMBER A GOVERNMENT THAT DIDN’T LIKE A GROUP OF PEOPLE. THAY DIDN’T FEEL THEY EARNED OR SHOULD KEEP WAHT THEY HAD AND IT WAS CONFISCATED,CIRCA 1930 GERMANY. NO, NEVER HERE IN AMERICA, WE ARE DIFFERENT. YEA, RIGHT!
Although I personally believe the bonuses should have never been paid in the first place, this could establish a prescient – that is, Congress could decide to start leveling a heafty tax on ANYONE that get a a bonus.
The operative word is BONUS not Payroll. They obviously didn’t bode well in their Running of the Junk, so lets not distort the picture. They loose money every, every day. These execs get a paycheck to loose this money. They don’t deserve anymore money to loose more of OUR TAX PAYERS money.
If you are not part of the solution you are part of the problem.
This is a distraction within a distraction. The senate must stop this as it’s their job. Do not confuse retention bonus with merit bonus. These people were paid to stay not rewarded for profits.
Rosie, you’re kidding, right? You’re no longer on the View, so please…
Our greatest National Treasure is our constitution – Nancy and company are treading on our freedom, all the while ignoring that we are a people who claim to abide by the rule of law. Congress is singling out a group to destroy in order to appear competent and serving the American people. This is mob rule at its worst. They are shaming us in front of the world.
Obama is saying that he is stunned by the revelation of these bonuses, yet there is some evidence that he had been advised about them when the stimulus bill was passed. So, either our president is lying to us, because his Treasury Secretary advised him, or he’s simply an incompetent manager, because he didn’t review the legislation and he allowed his Treasury Secretary to put these bonuses by him.
For the love of Christ what is wrong with our country? America has turned into a herd of sheep.
We passionately protest things we know nothing about. Have the media run a story on bonuses and we will march down the streets holding up signs and shouting chants. We will write letters to our congressmen, complain in blogs, send out email chains. WE WILL BE HEARD!!!!! It does not matter that we have not bothered to read the whole story, they were not performance bonuses. AGAIN NOT PERFORMANCE BONUSES!!!!! The people who received these bonuses were employees that like any normal person started to jump ship when they realized there was a breach in the hull. That’s right if your boss came to you and said our business is failing we will be closing the doors in six months would you be the idiot that waited the full six months before finding a new job? No of course not, you would be brushing off your resume, using your networking skills and hunting through the newspaper trying to find a replacement for your lively hood. In order to keep the unit functioning long enough to close it, AIG offered RETENTION, read it again RETENTION bonuses for those employees that stayed and got the job done.
Here is what was wrong with that; the amount of the bonuses not the bonus itself.
Now because of our chanting and protesting and complaining we have allowed congress to pass legislation that is against the constitution. Rather than be outraged we breathe a sigh of relief. What is wrong with us? Congress just passed a law that goes against the constitution because they screwed up and didn’t read. That’s right they are claiming they did not know about the bonuses when the signed the bailout so to fix their mistake they are doing something highly illegal. We should be screaming about this, we should be protesting this, we should be doing anything other than agreeing with this lunacy.
Your anger is misplaced. Please someone cant we think before we act. Lets just try that once and see how it goes.
Well said. Just curious… what do you guys think would happen if we just let AIG go down the drain? I have heard a ton about the steps needed to keep AIG alive, but why can’t we just let them die? Their CL insurance wing seems to be doing alright.
According to Liddy, this failed division of AIG is going away. He stated that he is attempting to do so in a more affordable manner. According to Liddy, the price of the retention bonuses was nothing to compare with the cost of mismanaging the portfolio – just letting it go.
why did our federal government give around $170 billion to AIG with no strings attached? that is the REAL question we should all be asking. noe of us can go borrow or get money from any financial institution without a detailed explanation and budget of how it is to be spent. Why did AIG not have to do that?
What if, instead of bailing out AIG and the banks, the gov’t distributed $4 Trillion Dollars to the American people? It’s like $12,000 for every man woman and child. My debt would be abolished freeing up room to spend, which in turn would stimulate the economy. Is this idea too primitive? It certainly seems better than what is going on now.
Jen, now come on, you’re using logic and common sense — something collectively the American people haven’t used in a long time!!!!
I mean, jeez, it’s ok to throw the constitution on the ground, stomp on it, do the twist on it, spit on it and not one eyebrow is raised — the state of our “union” makes me want to vomit.

Now, how about a few of us start a grass roots effort to write tax legislation to tax the bejeebers out of every congressman or senator that we feel failed in his/her job.
Not a fan of AIG’s by any definition, however I believe this type of tax bodes ill for our country.
And yes, I can spell, I don’t type very well however….

You people do realize this is unconstitutional…
Article 1; Section 8; paragraph 21
“No bill of attainder or ex post facto Law shall be passed.”
Mark, I’m sure you mean Section 9. Section 8 deals with the right to tax.
And I think section 9 has to do with Immigration.
My bad…
Article I, Section 9, paragraph 3
Although I personally believe the bonuses should have never been paid in the first place, this could establish a prescient – that is, Congress could decide to start leveling a heafty tax on ANYONE that get a a bonus.
Not something I’d be interested in.

“No bill of attainder or ex post facto Law shall be passed.”
Definition:
A legislative act that singles out an individual or group for punishment without a trial.

I hope they get every penny back from these bums, and give it to causes benefitting children and pets. They are our greatest national treasure.
Rosie, you are supporting fascism…
so what else is new for Rosie. I heard she also suppots Hostess in a very big way too!

Are Obama and Chris Dodd (as the top 2 politicians reveiving $ from AIG) going to give back the over $200K in campaign money they received from AIG??
Baaaa! Baaaaa!

Reminds me of that movie PCU w/ all these idiots protesting something new every week.
…the land of the brave….

..home of the whopper? Sure as hell isn’t the home of the free anymore
I just learned that Obama is going to impose a 40% tax on aspirin.
The reason given….anything that is white and works, needs to be taxed.
By the way, Obama is only paying ½ the tax!
The power to tax is the power to destroy.
