Travelers always touts its bench strength, so why the new hire from the outside rather than from within? Adding once again to the ranks of overpaid execs. Have you seen Macy’s results the past few years and we don’t need to mention the fall of Citi.

Well, either the Press Release was wrong or the company management erred in their assignment of the business unit she is appointed to. First, name any woman who has been really successful selling insurance? I am talking about going out to see customers on a one-on-one basis and selling insurance. If any, not many. Second, the woman has been assigned to personal lines. Personal lines is price driven and needs little advertising. Your prices tell the story. How much advertising does AARP do. Nominal. Why is she assigned to another female unit manager. Who knows. Just another PC appointment for an advertising executive.
These appointments do drive other good people out, and put off brokers and agents due to the PC nature of the hire. Good Luck.

Check the definition of marketing again, it includes a bit more than just advertising. It also includes branding, product development and positioning, identification of markets, growth strategy, and a lot of tasks other than casting actors and scheduling ad time.

Also, it is a good thing that personal lines insurers don’t need to advertise; maybe that is why we never see ads for GEICO, Progressive, Nationwide, and Allstate and that the total marketing spend on auto alone is several billion dollars.

Sally, nice post. I notice the knucklehead before you did not include a name. Yes I would be ashamed to be him/her as well. While it’s true that price seems to rule PL’s, it’s also true that consumers are demanding a “brand” to go with that price. I wish her well.
