I agree that it would be a fantastic idea to have storm surge warnings but for it to take 2-3 years for approval is just stupid. Something that could/would have the potential to save plenty of lives should be approved immediatly! Unless of course this is a Government approval thing in which case it could take forever to get approved just like the flood insurance program which of course would help in effected storm surge areas. I just don’t understand how no brainer things that should be approved are not and stupid wasteful things get but in to action.
These idiots rank right up there with the FAA. Neither can get anything done in less than a year. As for the storm surge warning, I have to disagree with it’s value. This sounds like another dumb idea generated by the Haiti disaster. Most places don’t build mud huts so close to the water. Areas prone to hurricanes already know the potential for surges. What are they supposed to do with a warning? Move their buildings?
Elmo you bring up an good point that advance surge warnings would have no affect on the property damage caused to coastal areas. But how about the protection of human life? We have all read about individuals that choose to remain in their properties for one reason or another. Perhaps a surge warning would save lifes, especially with category 1 or 2 huricanes.
Wonder if they are going to be “naming” storm surge warnings???
Hoping not, since this will trigger “named storm” property deductibles which in some cases, can be substantial…
Thanks.
Storm surge warnings make sense. If you look at Kartina the storm surge was just as destructive the damaging winds.

“Center officials this week floated the idea of a storm-surge warning…”. Great description & nice play on words.
