Half of the questions on a written driving test are just there to take up space. Who can accurately determine how many feet there are between them and the car in front of them? Just keep your eyes on the road and make sure there is enough room in front of you to stop. An experienced driver knows how to do this.
On the highway it’s fairly easy to determine the distance someone is ahead of you. Each stripe (the lane dividers) on a federal highway and most state maintained roads are 10 feet long with a 20 ft gap between them.
Keep at least 2 stripes between you and the guy ahead to have 40′ of room.
It’s easier for most drivers to count two or three seconds distance between them & the car in front. As speed increases, so does distance & it’s safer.
Using the minimum 2 second rule is the best method, this increases the distance between cars the fast your go. I would recommend using a 3 or 4 second rule at interstate speeds and if you are not familar with that particular roadway. Striping distance is correct as mentioned, but many roadways are no longer following specs….to many low budget contractors that don’t even know what the Motor Vehicle Code is. Nor do many governmental bodies.
Make a note the top 15 states are the lowest in illegal aliens – rubbish that does not belong here but gets here and has no clue about the habits and driving skills on the US highways- I know it for a fact because I peel them out of wrecks all the time

Not surprised at all to see CT drivers so far down the list. People in this state can’t drive for $hit.
As for NY/NJ…I don’t think its necessarily that the they aren’t knowledgeable drivers. I think they just don’t give a crap when they cut you off.
Don’t forget MA. They don’t call ’em Massholes for nothing.

Wish the guy behind me staring at my tailpipe would read this!
