Zurich to Offer Accident Benefits for Overseas Federal Contract Workers

July 27, 2011

Zurich is now offering accident benefits to U.S. government contract workers who are employed overseas. Zurich’s new Defense Base Act (DBA) Accident Wraparound policy provides benefits for employees who are involved in accidents while off the job. Zurich also offers occupational coverage that provides compensation when contractors or owner-operators are injured on the job.

The DBA, mandated by the U.S. government, requires all U.S. government contractors and subcontractors to secure workers’ compensation insurance for their employees working overseas, as well as provide death benefits to eligible survivors of employees killed in the course of employment.

In 2008, Zurich began offering workers compensation insurance for U.S. citizens and foreign nationals who are working on federal contracts outside the country on military bases, overseas public works projects or similar contracts funded by the U.S. government.

Zurich’s DBA Accident Wraparound policy is available to customers even if their primary DBA insurance is not provided by Zurich and provides:

  • Out-of-country accidental death & dismemberment coverage
  • Accident medical and sickness insurance
  • Competitive limits of coverage
  • 24-hour accident protection
  • Exposure and disappearance coverage
  • War risk coverage
  • Medical evacuation and repatriation
  • Occupational and non-occupational coverage
  • Superior claims handling and medical benefits coordination
  • Zurich Travel Assist assistance and security services when traveling just about anywhere in the world

“Let’s face it; accidents can happen any time of the day,” said Bryan Salvatore, head of Accident & Health for Zurich North America Commercial. “And with America’s presence remaining active in foreign locations, the need for accident coverage is greater than ever for employees involved in U.S.-related business and projects overseas.”
