I get it that the NFL is probably the most brutal game ever devised by man. I also get it that no one held a gun to the head of any player to get them to sign a contract to take all that punishment. They all realized that their career could end on any given play. It didn’t help that in recent years, the players are so much bigger and faster and collisions are more violent. It really doesn’t matter how good the equipment is, the serious injuries will continue.

The difference is that hockey players see it as a badge of honor.

They’re a breed apart, for sure.

This falls into the same category of any other violent sport–you play, you take the risk of injury.

Look at all the long term brain injuriess professional boxers suffer.

You don’t see them suing for damages.

Only 2 counts against NFL Properties so we don’t have to defend?

I want to know how this pans out. I work in an office like most of us on here. I stare at a computer screen all day to do my job. My eyes are getting worse every day. If they can sue for something that was pretty easily identifiable, then I should be able to sue for my now poor eye sight thanks to my employer removing us from the paper environment.

Baxtor, since you want to sue for poor eyesight, don’t forget to throw in Carpal Tunnel Syndrome from operating your keyboard. You might get lucky and get total disability.

Isn’t it true that you must have a brain before it can be injured???

It has been revealed recently that 60% of all players in the NFL are broke within 5 years of the end of their football career. They sign multi-million dollar deals with huge signing bonuses and then blow it with high living, poor investments, broken marriages, girl friends. Now, they can blame the NFL for their loss of income due to brain injuries. These guys weren’t equipped to do gainful employment even if they hadn’t taken shots to their head.

William – The Fridge_ Perry with all his millions and endorsement money he made should have been set for life. Instead he went to work Laying Brick. Once Fame and fortune and piles of money Da Coaches pet. Now broke and laying brick.
        Sad but true agent.

FFA, there have been numerous cases of players who “attended” college, but didn’t get an education and were passed on because they could play ball. Some are functionally illiterate and can’t even read their pro contract. Agents prey on these guys and say they will be taken care of and in the end, the money is all gone and they are busted. They either do menial manual labor or they get busted trying to deal drugs and the like. A Dallas Cowboy, Nate Newton got caught with a couple hundred pounds of marijuana in his car and his excuse was that he didn’t know it was there and someone else put it there. Not much of an IQ on most of them.

There are also many successful ex-NFL players. Look at Elway, Emanuel, Smith, Griffin & Horn. They’re not all dummies.

I don’t think anyone said they were all dummies. The ones you cited were some examples of guys that did get educated and had prospects after they retired. They are definitely in the minority. Kurt Warner was bagging groceries before he got his shot in the NFL. Obviously, he wasn’t prepared for the real world prior to then. I hope he has enough sense to hang onto his wealth now that he is retired.
