yoyowordup: It is too simplistic to blame bicyclists for the increase in deaths. The riders are, after all, killed by car & truck drivers. As both a bike rider and automobile driver, I see negligent acts by both sides.
All they need is bigger helmets. And I am sure that with the CDC seeking Federal Funding to take on highway deaths (due to the number of deaths it must be a communicable disease!); the CDC will push for larger more protective head gear. Here in CA, bicycle riding has become a bit nuts, with the bicycle lobby fighting to avoid taxes and their right to take over the entire road. Share the road? Tax based on the value of the bike and use that money to widen the road and add bike lanes. But in reality, if they did tax em, the money would be used to pay the state employee pension fund
Ever since Lance Dopestrong popularized tight shiny outfits, the bike herd rides like Tour Duh France entitled wannabes ignoring safety rules because of a silly helmet. I still ride my bike like a street kid in the 70s no helmet against traffic watching every move of the tons of steel out there.
Jeff, In rural areas around Austin, Tx, the Lance wannabes ride on small country roads with no shoulders and you have to follow them in your car because they ride 2-5 abreast. They even had the gall to complain the Williamson County Sheriff’s dept because the rancher’s guard dogs were coming into the road to bark and nip at them. Well, they are guarding their heards and you do look aggressive on your two wheeled cycle. The ranchers were told to put their guards up so that they would startle the bike riders. We wouldn’t want them to have to give up their hobby so the rancher can make some money.
Yeah Perplexed, I get the snide comments, funny. I am not a cyclist but I am a runner and the traffic issues are similar. So cyclists want to ride out in the country, where there is less traffic and less chance of injury. Seems logical. They also do not want to be attacked by dogs. I’ve had to fight off a dog or two – you really don’t know if the dog is going to pounce or not. Shouldn’t the dogs be INSIDE the fence?
As bicyclists continue to ride as close to the traffic lane as possible, deaths will continue to increase.

When I saw the headline the first thing I thougth was the increase is due to bicyclists wearing headphones.
