Actually this increase can be atrributed to the NFL Lawsuit creating increased awareness about the matter & some of the associated tragedies.
Coaches are deferring to their trainers now, instead of using the age-old, “walk it off and get back out there” mentality. These were always there, just not reported. I remember 30 years ago in HS, we thought it was “cool” & “funny” when someone got their “bell rung”, especially if it was the defensive guy who “put the hit on” someone. We used to compare & brag about who had more scuff marks on our helmets. those only result from helmet to helmet contact.
It’s kind of like when you buy a new car. All of a sudden, you see 100 of the same make & model every day. Whereas before, you never really noticed them.
