Telematics like this might work if only one driver is at the wheel of a car 100% of the time. In our book of over 7000 policy holders I would venture to say we could have some degree of confidence that this would be the case for perhaps 1000 of them, 80% of the time. The remainder would include spouses sharing cars, teens sharing cars, a combination of both plus a myriad of other possible combinations. I predict someone will post suggesting that a driver will indicate who he or she is upon taking the wheel but quite honestly I have no confidence in that ever working. Not until devices are equipped with video cameras to ensure the person logging in (the 48 y/o mother of 3 with no blemishes on her driving record in 20 years) is truly the one driving vs the actual driver (her 17 year old son with 2 speeding tickets in 12 months).
I’m 46 years old, a co-owner of the agency, and a BIG supporter of technology and innovation and advancements in insurance products and services. I’m also a realist and I’m having a hard time wrapping my head around this entire concept. Not saying it can’t work, just saying I’m not sure how.
