As of 8 a.m East Coast time, Danny, which became a Category 3 hurricane last Friday, had weakened substantially to a tropical depression with maximum sustained winds of 35 mph, according to the National Hurricane Center (NHC).
The storm center says the storm will now head west through the Leeward Islands today and then pass south of Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands tonight and tomorrow. Danny is expected to bring two to four inches of rain over the Leeward Islands, the U.S. and British Virgin Islands, and Puerto Rico through Tuesday..
The weather service is using an Air Force Hurricane Hunter aircraft to track Danny.
The NHC had forecast that Danny would weaken as it has from its Friday rating as a Category 3 hurricane, on the Safir-Simpson scale of 5.
Danny is the fourth storm of the six-month Atlantic season, and the first to reach hurricane status.
