In Georgia we still have plenty of people shopping. The problem is finding a company that will take them. The standard markets won’t write the auto without the home. One standard company won’t write an auto with previous state minimum limits(25/50/25)even if we get them to take 100/300 or 250/500.

Some won’t take the Home without the Auto. Quite a dilemma, isn’t it? State Farm just lost $7 Billion on Personal Auto. Allstate and GEICCO also lost money on that line. In my view, the biggest challenge is how to rate for cell addicts who text or talk while driving. Perhaps monitoring devices????? These people are a menace and have no clue what is going on around them.

Agent – I agree people who text and drive are a danger on the roads and it’s illegal and unsafe. But how do you expect a carrier to actually identify that group of people?

It can’t solely be based on age as age discrimination is illegal. You can’t ask them on the application, “Do you use your cell phone while driving?” since nobody would admit to it.

And the problem with monitoring devices is they can’t distinguish if you’re using the phone from the driver or passenger seat. If my wife is driving and I’m using my cell phone in the passenger seat, I should not have to pay “driver cell addict surcharge fees” or whatever we call it.

I ask you sincerely, how can we legally identify those cell addicts?

Rosenblatt, it is a hard dilemma to resolve. I promise you that if you have a person sitting in front of you with a cell in their hand and scrolling on it as you ask questions, they are an addict and are inattentive. Strict enforcement of the ban may help along with heavy fines and repeat offenders losing their license may help. Driver education on young drivers with pictures of accidents that cell addicts caused may scare some kids “straight”, but we are living in a world of instant gratification and that is what these people seek. It is almost as bad as a Marijuana smoker thinking the dope is manageable and does not alter the mind.

            Agent,

You are asking the government to solve the problem. Very Conservative of you.

Everything you mentioned mirrors how we have tried to eliminate drunk/drugged driving. yet that is still a significant problem.

Just increase the surcharges for cell phone violations to account for the increased risk those drivers present.

Living in a free society involves risk that people will abuse their liberty and harm others. Let the insurance companies and civil courts handle this and stop with your advocacy for even more government infringing upon our lives.

Ron, how can you be that stupid? Have you ever heard of local law enforcement enforcing traffic laws in this country? Where did I advocate the Federal Government doing this? Conservatives believe in law enforcement, not letting the goofy Progressives do whatever they want. Pokémon Go addicts should lose their license the first time they are caught. As our new President often says, “something should happen” and it better happen soon or these cell addicts will ruin the Loss Ratio’s of all carriers.

            Agent,

Since when is wanting more freedom and liberty, and less government, stupid? It is actually a Libertarian philosophy, not Progressive. Get educated, please.

Where did I use the term “Federal”? Too much government is too much government regardless of the level.

In Canada they were moving toward a model that checked cell phone use records at the time of a loss for all involved, with the goal of limiting liability if a driver was on their cell. That would seem to be the way to go – it’s not only young drivers using their phones while driving, after all. Wonder if that’s a possibility?

        Agent –

Geico and Allstate have not lost money on auto insurance. Their profitability has been diminished. You’ve got to stop spreading false information here.

The biggest dog losing money was State Farm. $7 Billion lost on Personal Auto, closing down 11 offices and either laying off or re-assigning 4,200 employees. Try to stay up with the news.

State Farm has been in the process of migrating workers to large hubs. The announcement about other offices around the country closing was expected and would have been announced regardless of underwriting results.

Agent, if you are privy to Geico’s auto financials, you would be the first one to see them. Even AM Best says they cannot tell if Geico is making money, as Geico’s financials are not public. They are buried deep in Berkshire Hatheway. Most suspect Geico is not priced to make money, and instead is a vehicle for BH to use the premium money as a float to use in other business to make money.

Ron, believe it or not, this country is a nation of laws, not of men who think the Constitution is merely a living document to be interpreted however they want. Your hero thought it was far too restrictive since it kept telling him what he couldn’t do.

By the way, if we didn’t have law enforcement in this country, we would quickly have anarchy like the anarchists want. Good thing we now have Gorsuch in and hopefully we see Ruth Buzzi leave sometime in the summer. Also good that there is a new sheriff in town who believes in Law Enforcement. Send all the Anarchists to Venezuela so they can have maximum anarchy.

If the company would stop (Spending – Wasting) on advertising and invest in the field force they might see growth. Auto owners does a modest amount of advertising / spending and they rank on top of the heap. Geico spends over 1.2 Billion on advertising – Allstate & Progressive also think they can spend into the business. BTW – Berkshire was leveraged by the use of the Insurance deposits in National General (I think that’s the right one).

I think one of the problems is a large bureaucracy in Insurance Companies…too many thinkers and less doers. And also huge budgets expended in advertising. In my case as Agent, I keep working hard in customer service rather than expending in advertising and that is a proven way to retain happy and loyal customers. If I care of my customers, then will care about me and my family. Adolfo Soto, WA
