I hope that was sarcasm. Rear passengers can get injured in auto accidents like front seat passengers.

Agent, this is supposed to be the land of the free and home of the brave, but Conservatives want complete control over what a woman does with her body and what substances adults can put into our own bodies, even if neither of those actions hurt anyone else. Hypocritcal much?

      Wayne,
Could not agree with you more. Regular health check ups including checking a man’s prostate save lives as well. Is the government going to mandate that men over X age submit to these exams as well.

I concur that seat belts save lives but so do motorcycle helmets, bicycle helmets etc. etc, I do not need the government to tell me how to live. As long as my choices do not impact anyone else then they are my choices.

It’s bad enough the government wants to tell us how to live, but these groups are actually trying to FORCE the government to tell us how to live and wants to punish them for not doing so fast enough. Who the hell do they think they are?

Agreed. I presume you take that stance unilaterally and extend it to things like Marijuana legalization, as well.

I am an old-school conservative and the notion that the government needs to control every aspect of my life is egregious. As long as I am not hurting anyone, they can back off. The moment I encroach on another’s rights, then by all mean, give me a ticket or whatever.

One of my favorite quotes about the law: “Your right to throw a punch stops at another man’s nose.” Do whatever you want, the moment it gets in the way of someone else’s rights, you did something wrong. That’s freedom. This “we’re too stupid to make our own decisions so damn it government, hurry up and decide for us” nonsense pisses me off. And in case some people are wondering…you do not have the right to not be offended by something you disapprove of.

          Doug,
I hear you, but to play devil’s advocate, one does become a flying object inside and/or outside the vehicle, by not wearing a seat belt. A passenger in the back could cause a broken neck to someone sitting up front. Could be tossed out of the car and into a pedestrian. In other words, there are scenarios and hence arguments why all passengers should have a seat belt on. One of my friends was ejected from the back seat of a vehicle during a roll over and it was due to not being strapped in. Luckily, he only hurt himself, landing in a field.

I understand that you don’t want to be told what to do with your life. I respect that. However, when you are driving a vehicle on public roads you need to follow rules to keep all drivers safe. If you fail to wear a seat belt and hit something like a pole, avoiding a driver who is texting and runs a light, or another vehicle and project, heaven forbid, into the street. I swerve out of the way of your flying body and crash into a pole. Therefore your choice to not wear a seat belt has resulted in my pain. We live in a world where people need to use common sense to keep everyone else safe. These laws are not ridiculous or over bearing. They simply require you to maintain some common sense.

If all drivers were to drive defensively, there would be no accidents. Drivers choose to be distracted in many ways, and they must be held legally accountable.

Bob, just received some interesting stats from our leading Auto carrier.
      Distracted Drivers
87% admit to risky behavior behind the wheel
70% admit to talking on their cell while driving
42% admit to texting while driving.

No wonder we have an epidemic in Auto losses and carriers are taking it on the chin on losses. State Farm lost $7 billion on Personal Auto alone last year.

It is an epidemic for sure. New technologies will hopefully be developed and implemented soon by the people who make devices, cars, and/or insurers to prevent people from using their devices while driving, or at least reward those who do enable such preventative measures via premium discounts or other means.

Otherwise, fatal accidents and property damage will continue to be way, way higher than they should be.
