Tech Company Roost Forms Insurer Partnerships for Home Telematics Pilot

February 13, 2018

Roost, a provider of home telematics for property insurance carriers, has partnered with Erie Insurance to test customer engagement with its Roost Smart Water Leak and Freeze Detector device in order to prevent water damage claims.

The Roost Smart Water Leak and Freeze Detector is designed to sense water leaks as well as humidity and freezing temperature situations. It then delivers smartphone alerts via the Roost mobile app to help minimize water damage and loss. This smart Wi-Fi enabled detector sets up in less than five minutes and can be located in places around the home that are most prone to water leaks such as sinks, hot water heaters, toilets and various appliances.

The partnership with Eerie comes on the heels of Roost’s first insurance partner, State Automobile Mutual Insurance Company (State Auto), which joined Roost’s Home Telematics Program (HTP) last month.

State Auto will have access to a variety of Roost Smart Sensors, including the Roost Smart Battery (for smoke alarms) and the Roost Smart Water Leak and Freeze Detector.

The Roost Smart 9V Battery transforms existing smoke alarms into smart alarms. If the alarm sounds and no one is home, a smartphone notification is delivered.

In partnership with Willis Towers Watson, and other industry partners, the HTP is working to apply advanced analytics to reveal insights into the effect of home installation of Roost smart sensors on fire and water loss mitigation as well as customer engagement.

Roost, a headquartered in Sunnyvale, Calif., created the patented Roost Smart Battery and the Roost Smart Water Leak and Freeze Detector, a connected platform of data sensors providing insurers with home telematics products. Roost’s primary go-to-market approach is through insurance companies deploying directly to their policyholders to reduce claim cost expenses (fire and water perils costing $20 billion per year in the U.S.) and drive policyholder engagement through its digital mobile app.

Erie Insurance Group, based in Erie, Pa., is a homeowners automobile insurer in the United States with more than 5 million policies in force. It operates in 12 states and the District of Columbia.

State Automobile Mutual Insurance Company, headquartered in Columbus, OH, is a super regional property and casualty insurance holding company and a member of State Auto Group.
