In this case, it is more like 3 to tango. The R’s and the D’s in congress and the senate all came to an agreement, passed a bill, put it in front of the President, who was ready to sign it, and then at the last minute, for some reason chose not to.

Let us not forget that the only thing holding up the budget being passed is that there is not money for the border wall. The border wall we were promised Mexico would pay for. No fiscally conscious conservative should be in favor of this waste of funds. Man power and technology is what is needed. Without man power or technology a wall would be useless anyways. Home Depot is always having sales on ladders.

Trump – Sept 2013: “”If you say who gets fired, it always has to be the top. Problems start from the top, and they have to get solved from the top, and the president’s the leader…”

Trump – Sept 2013: “…”when they talk about the government shutdown, they’re going to be talking about the president of the United States, who the president was at that time. They’re not going to be talking about who was the head of the House, the head the Senate, who’s running things in Washington.”

Trump – Dec 2018: ““We have to have a wall. … I will take the mantle of shutting it down. I will shut it down for border security”

Trump – Dec 2018: ““You know what I’ll say? ‘Yes, if we don’t get what we want…I will shut down the government.”

Trump – Dec 2018: ” “And I am proud to shut down the government for border securit…So I will take the mantle. I will be the one to shut it down. I’m not going to blame you for it.”

@Rosenblatt. THOUSANDS of years is a Straw Man argument. What’s been the situation AFTER the wall was built? Did Russian Commies build a wall to keep people out or in? Do Hollyweirdos and Dem politicians build walls around their homes to keep themselves in … or to keep creepy people out?

Those slats were shown to be sawed apart. There are ladders, tunnels, saws, and sledgehammers. The wall is a big waste, there are better ways to secure the border, which is what the Ds are saying. If it is a true emergency, shouldn’t it have been called already? Do you wait to call the fire department when your house is on fire? Do you wait to call 911 when someone isn’t breathing? Tramp is playing politics with his #Trampshutdown

Trump is not used to hearing the word “no” and this is a priority to him because it was one of his biggest campaign promises. He doesn’t want to appear weak to the conservative pundits who backed him. The Dems don’t want to budge because they can’t stand Trump.

BOTH sides need to come to the table and COMPROMISE. There is no doubt that illegal immigration is a problem, though not as extreme as Trump is making it and not to be taken as lightly as the Dems are taking it. Instead of offering the full $5.7 billion, why not offer $2 billion so he can build some of his wall and the other $3.7 billion can go to enhancing the security at the ports (where the majority of drugs come in to our country), and improving the E-Verify system to make its use MANDATORY for ALL employers, with heavy fines for those caught hiring illegal immigrants (even Trump’s clubs).

At the bare minimum, OPEN THE GOVERNMENT. This isn’t a reality show…people’s lives are being affected by those idiots playing politics.

          Just my take.

            Craig,

I agree with you. Problem is this, President Trump had that meeting with Pelosi and Schumer televised. He became overly emotional and handed the Democrats a weapon to use against him. Why would they even consider funding the wall since it would give him his victory and remove a valuable sound bite in 2020, especially if the shutdown starts to slow down economic growth?

Both sides only play the political game to gain/maintain power and control. Until we the people decide we are sick of it and start electing more 3rd party candidates, it is our fault.

If only there was a time when the Republican’s had control of all three branches of government under Trump and he could’ve had a much easier path to getting in his wall funded. But alas, it’s always been the Democrats obstructing him for the past few years. (end sarcasm)

Oh, yes. Remember when Obama promised Hispanics in 2008 that he would address immigration in his first year in office? And then he did nothing about immigration at all for 4 years
except his executive order on the “dreamers”.

And then in 2012, he told Hispanics he was sorry about not delivering on his promise, but if he got re-elected, then for SURE he would fix immigration.

But it is all Trump’s fault.

Obama had all three branches of government in 2008 and 2009. He had promised Hispanic groups he would address immigration reform in his first year in office, which was 2008.

Okay … so Obama failed to do something he promised. I get that. Heck, I am happy to acknowledge there are other times Obama failed to do what he promised (Gitmo never closed, did it?).

However, just because Obama failed to uphold his promises does not give Trump a pass when he fails to do the same, nor can blame be shifted to the Dem’s for the lack of wall funding when Trump had 2 years to get something passed while the R’s held majorities in all three branches of government.

Down here in San Diego, where a “wall” or border fence went up a long time ago, people know that they work. People near the border used to have migrants running through their back yards routinely. Crowds would often rush the border to overwhelm border security.

That all stopped when the fence went up.

Over the weekend, San Diegans were laughing at CNN (again).

CNN called a local news station (KUSI) and asked to put someone on the air to talk about the lack of effectiveness of the existing fence that runs from San Diego to Arizona.

When CNN heard that the journalists locally who know the issue best would talk about how effective the border fence was in stopping drugs and illegal immigration, CNN dropped the request.

Trump counted on Nancy & Schmucky for support, based on their prior votes for a wall. So, why did he need to RUSH to get the wall funded?

So, a PERTINENT question is: why are Nancy & Schmucky willing to allow US citizens to CONTINUE to be raped, robbed (at gunpoint, and at ‘IRS-point via welfare fraud’), murdered, etc. ???

PS The 60 Senate votes rule applies to such a bill, not a 51 majority. Tell us how many US Senators were Republicans over 2017-2018.

The vast majority of illegals in this country are visa overstays, not people coming from Mexico. Regardless, funding the wall and opening the government should be two separate items. Open the government because it should be open, stop holding federal employees hostage. Then start negotiating on the wall and other security measures.

Oh, please. The Democrats could easily and rapidly come to a compromise: make the Dreamers citizens for border security. They could even trap Trump by coming up with a real plan that isn’t a wall: a specific, credible alternative for border security (instead of vague “technology walls” according to Nancy, whatever that means). But they don’t offer anything, even for the Dreamers.

And you think that AFTER re-opening the government the Dems. will offer something? HA HA HA. Turn off CNN for a minute and think for yourself about this. A majority of Americans believe we should have border security and the Democrats offer nothing specific on the issue. Now why is that?

There should be a law placed in force regarding ALL people entering into the USA without proper and legal documentation; but he should not cause everyone in the US to suffer because he campaigned on a LIE…”We will not pay for the WALL” !!!
