Tesla says that “Autopilot” is not a system for autonomous driving – keep your hands on the wheel. When will they learn to change the name of the system? People are apparently too stupid to realize they cannot ignore their driving responsibility when using the system because “Autopilot” sure sounds like they can just let the system do the driving. Come on, Tesla.

I don’t understand why your post has 0 likes and 2 dislikes. If I voted here, it would be 1-2. Autopilot CLEARLY warns drivers multiple ways that they need to keep your hands on the wheel, pay attention, and be ready to take over control in an instant should the need arise. Although I doubt Autopilot itself caused the fire, it wouldn’t surprise me if the crash happened because the driver wasn’t showing proper lookout and didn’t react to the danger in a timely manner.

I’m guessing it’s because CL PM’s post was well-reasoned and articulate, without bashing Tesla or Elon Musk.

I guessing the 2 dislikes were Elon and a Tesla engineer.

That’s not what made me laugh. It was your suggestion that I confused a 0 with an 11 when you posted 2 hours after me and the votes had changed in that timeframe.

Also, what am I missing here? Why do a handful of Tesla fatalities warrant investigation by the NHTSA when there are close to 100 automobile fatalities every day in the US? Are the other auto manufacturers also regularly investigated? Is it just the concern about the batteries?

I dont know why the media makes such a big deal over tesla crashes… MILLIONS of people die every year due to distracted or drunk driving. And tesla cars can neither be distracted or drunk! Making them far safer than any other car on the road. No machine is perfect, but they are a lot closer to it than humans! People get killed by robots a lot (forklifts, and factory machines) but the news never really covers those stories… I really have no clue why all the media is trying to kill tesla…

Obviously just my opinion, but I think one reason the media is focusing on Tesla is because it’s the first thing the average Joe thinks of when they think of autonomous vehicles. They’re basically the testing ground for people’s opinions on the safety of driverless cars, even if they’re still ~10 years away from Level 5 automation, since most folks think Telsa is the first real autonomous vehicle on the road.

Because the NHTSA already investigated traditional automotive vehicles throughout the course of existence. Their jobs now center upon investigation of new tech to determine its safety for the society and market as a whole. Autonomous vehicle tech is new and high profile, which is why the investigations are afoot. If the tech is subject to vulnerabilities in its programming or optics, the consumers deserve to know. Autonomous vehicles may face strict liability thresholds for hardware/software failures. As insurance professionals, we are needing to be aware of the true bearer of liability for these losses and the insurability of the exposures.

Only 37,000 people died crashes in the US in 2017 and that was a decrease from 37,800 in 2016, def not ‘millions’. I think the concern is that Teslas seem to have a higher rate of fires due to accidents than conventional automobiles.
