As well they should! Eschewing radar solely for visual cameras is utterly useless if the lenses are covered with snow or mud.

Tesla should prove their system works. Requiring specific technology (cameras, lidar, radar, or sonar0 stifles innovation. If the tech doesn’t work – disapprove. If the tech does work, allow. Too bad neither entity did any testing.

Tesla will never be able to prove that standard cameras work when covered in ice, snow or mud.

Radar also has its situations when it doesn’t work and on top of that the data it sends can be difficult to correctly interpret. Its easier to know when a camera doesn’t have the correct data to be useful (ie the view is obstructed) which can turn off the system. Camera based safety systems are proven effective and no doubt Telsa has added tech to expand their usefulness.

The bigger issue is these are meant to be safety systems and driver aids… not auto pilots. A true self driving cars require multiple concurrent and redundant sensors.

Totally agree, which is why Tesla’s decision to ONLY use cameras and not use LIDAR or RADAR as a back-up/redundant system is exactly why I agree with the safety ranking change.

Well it is a safety rating not an autonomous driving rating… Also I don’t think Telsa’s had cameras before. Just radar. So they never had a backup system.

The root of this is the NHTSA removing credit for certain safety systems like auto braking, lane departure, etc because the system now uses cameras. However I own a Subaru that only uses cameras for those systems and the NHTSA gives it credit.

Something doesn’t make sense here. I’m sure there is more to the story.

I would prefer it if more objective statistics were used. Fatalities/number of miles driven adjusted for speed. Injury hospitalizations/number of miles driven, again adjusted for speed. I like the idea of adjusting for speed because, driving fast is the decision of the driver and should not punish the maker if more lead-foots are attracted to one car or another. The lead-foots are not created by the car, they choose the car. Do some cars beg to be driven fast? I don’t think so. Though, there are certainly cars that beg to be driven slower.

I just want to say one thing. the President and CEO of Consumer Reports, Marta L. Tellado, was Vice President for Global Communications and an officer of the board at Ford.
Yeah,a direct competitor whose survival was threatened by Tesla. Go figure. This Consumer Reports is now a joke.

Tellado was with the Ford Foundation, not Ford Motor. Very different and separate organizations.

You guys are a joke. Those are added safety features and should never be solely relied on, common sense. Do the cars that made the list have these added features?? The driver is Ultimately responsible not the car and having those added features is a plus. Tesla doesn’t bribe you like the other auto makers so you try to ruin them. Good luck with that.
