La. Insurance Commissioner Candidate Robbed in Monroe

September 15, 2006

Louisiana State Sen. James David Cain was robbed on the night of Sept. 12 outside a Monroe hotel and police quickly nabbed a suspect.

“The Monroe police, Monroe is blessed to have them,” Cain said. “They had the case solved by daylight.”

Cain, R-Dry Creek, has been traveling the state, campaigning for the post of insurance commissioner. He had checked into the Holidome on U.S. 165 at about 11:15 p.m. Tuesday and was returning to his car for his luggage when someone attacked him from behind and grabbed his wallet. His pants were either torn or cut during the incident.

Cain said he chased the suspect briefly then returned to the hotel to call authorities. He said police responded quickly, and, with the assistance of a police dog, captured a suspect at a residence about a mile away around 2 a.m. Cain said he identified the suspect from a police lineup around 5 a.m.

Robert Sampson, 29, was booked with robbery, resisting by flight and possession of cocaine.

Cain said his valuables, which included his wallet, were not recovered by Wednesday morning.
