I saw this on the news and worried that this bus charter company would not have coverage. How sad for the victims and families involved. I hope that can get some restitution.

A subsequent news report explained that the right front tire on the bus had been improperly or illegally retreaded, and that is what caused the accident. The tire either blew out or the tread shredded and caused the bus to swerve and flip onto its side. As far as the ex-wife’s comment, I’d be willing to bet that it was she who made sure everything was up to state-required standards!

    Much come to mind here:
1: what a tragedy for the families of those injured or killed
    2: Criminal charges are warranted
3: The state might now pay for the cost of medical care unless the injured had major med coverage without exclusions for auto injuries if they had any other coverage at all – maybe their own personal auto will step up under UM/UIM covg?
4: Bet this bus company submitted the lowest bid for the trip

Along with the obvious negligence of the bus company, I hope that the Church who hired the bus company gets what’s coming to them. When assuming responsibility for the transportation of its members, they should have asked for evidence of insurance from the bus company. Another fine example of the Catholic Church and its arrogant attitude towards its own members.

Nothing can diminish the heartfelt sorrow that goes out to the victems of this tragedy, but to think he operated a school bus company to boot is beyond comprehension.

I don’t know about anyone else, but I’ve found buses to be extremely dangerous on the road, top heavy, traveling too fast (regardless of wheather conditions or not) cutting across traffic, for the most part, the drivers look to be in their “advanced years” and they don’t care who is around them, they’ll run you off the road before they yield to a passenger vehicle.

Combine those factors with lack of maintenance and shady business practices, you’re looking at an accident waiting to happen.

Cannot say it enough…So sad… but preventable.

My @$$. If there was a way to violate the law, this guy found it. From operating illegally, using unqualified drivers, unsafe equipment and to top it all off, doing it all uninsured. Criminal charges are indeed warranted. They need to arrest the idiot before he disappears.

We all have seen the results of uninsured accidents. This is more than that. It is criminal and as such the operator of the company is due his day in court.

The only truely sad thing is that many of the victims aren’t alive to be there to see justice done.

CTC you are right on the money.

    Bus manufacturer,tire manufacture, Church,
drivers homeowners insurance, garage that serviced bus, state, county, city who “negligently designed/mainained the “dangerous” roadway.

There’s no doubt that with 17 fatalities, plaintiffs lawyers will be lining up with there double barrel shotguns!

This company operated like they were “South of the Border”. This guy is due some old fashioned Texas justice, going to jail ain’t enough. Judges only know how to slap hands in a case like this. Give this guy and his family to the bereaved families and let them render justice.

I am all for civil liberties, but laws in this country normally work to keep us all safe. America will become a third world country if we keep going this way!!!

Someone else verify this. If the agents who provide personal lines coverage sold med pay or PIP, uninsured motorist bodily injury, accidental death indemnity, then there should be coverages on their personal policie that may extend.

Running a retread tire on wheels that are steered on a bus in Texas is punishable by the death penalty or should be.

Agree with all the prior comments regarding this criminal that was running a company where the highest duty of care to the public is required.
Additional View: Where were the local, state and federal officials to enforce the cease operations order? They order them to shut down but then don’t follow up to make sure? Way to go govie.

Tell me again how the federal government (and, apparently, GWB personally) is responsible for this again? I’m one of those ignorant people who doesn’t believe that inflating my tires and an auto tune up is a legitimate energy policy.

Methinks Dubya is one of those that tends to blame everything on the sitting president. I’m all for holding presidents responsible for what happens on their watch, but there is a limit. And while I’m no fan of Bush’s by any measure I don’t think his policies could be tied to this accident.

When Bill & Hillary Clinton left office we had safe bus lines and cheap green energy sources that wer plentiful. After 7&1/2 years of Bush we are somehow out of clean burning fossil fuels, buses are going off mountains in Texas killing minorities, there is a war in Georgia that could easily spread to te rest of the Confederate states. If George Bush would of either left the bus tire inflation police in tact or created their agency none of this would of happened.

    Brokette,
Sarcasim? Hell no! When Bush stole the second election I moved to Havava to be with my main man, Fidel. We said if they elected that idiot again in 2004 we would either have to commit suicide or leave the country. Well I chose Havana because at least it is close to Club Gitmo. Only about a doze Dems kept their word the rest are still in the USA trying to wait for the Democratic messiah Obama this November to take over and make us truly one happy world.

There would be no need to drill more oil holes in the oceans. The reason this works is just inflating car tires properly would take care of our energy needs. If we put air back in the bus tires we could export oil to the Arabs.

I was just reading an article regarding another bus accident near Victoria, Texas. The Dallas Texas attorney who researched the situation also found that the bus company in that situation was operating without the proper registration and safety requirements. The article, by personal injury lawyer Amy Witherite, was a sad reminder that some people will cut any corners needed to make a buck, and sadly this often injures others.
