The Independent Insurance Agents of Texas Installs New Leadership

The Independent Insurance Agents of Texas (IIAT) has elected new leadership for 2009-2010.

Bryan Shofner, president of Shofner & Associates Insurance Agency Inc., a holding company that owns and operates Shofner Lynch and Shulse LLC in Texas and New Mexico, was installed as president for the coming year during the 112th Annual Conference & Trade Show. David Wood, vice president and partner at Bogan, Dunlap & Wood Insurance in Odessa, was named president-elect and Bob Shepard, of Shepard Walton King Insurance Group, Harlingen, will serve as vice president.

The IIAT also elected three new directors. Bill Barnard of Barnard Insurance Group in Wichita Falls, Kyle Paschall of Naler Insurance Agency Inc. in McGregor, and Diannah Tatum of Sanford & Tatum Insurance Agency in Lubbock will begin three-year terms on the IIAT Board of Directors on Sept. 1.

Shofner, Wood and Shepard also begin their new leadership roles on Sept. 1.

Shofner has served as IIAT president-elect and vice president, as well as an IIAT director. He has also served as the chairman of IMPACT and on the Personnel Recruitment & Development Task Force. At the state level, he has also chaired the Small Agency Advisory Council, was chair of the Independent Insurance Agents Junior Golf Classic committee and served on the Volunteer Development Committee. In 2001, Shofner was named IIAT Young Agent of the Year.

At the local level, Shofner is a past president of the Independent Insurance Agents of Lubbock. He has also chaired the Lubbock Big I Day Golf committee.

Wood served most recently as chairman of the IMPACT Regional Vice Presidents and has served on the IIAT board of directors for three years, including vice-president of IIAT for 2008-2009. He has been an active member on various IIAT committees during the intervening years, including the Budget & Finance Committee and the Volunteer Development Committee.

Wood was also president of his local association in the late ’80s. His professional experience includes service on numerous business advisory councils including Texas Mutual Insurance Co. He has also has been involved in several philanthropic organizations in the Midland/Odessa area.

Wood began his insurance career working for United General Insurance Agency in Midland and in 1986, founded David Wood & Associates.

In addition to serving on IIAT’s board of directors, Shepard served as chairman of the IIAT Windstorm Task Force in 2008-2009.

In the local community, he has served as a member of the Harlingen Industrial Foundation and president of the Harlingen Economic Development Board. He is a past member and chairman of the Harlingen Area Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors.

Active in higher education both locally and statewide, Shepard served as a past chairman of the University of Texas at Brownsville Development Board and the Pan American University Board of Regents. He was appointed by Gov. George Bush to the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board in 1996, and reappointed by Gov. Rick Perry in 2004 and served as chairman from 2005 to 2008.
