Oklahoma Grass Fires Burn Houses, Barns

Authorities say a large grass fire in northeastern Oklahoma that burned two houses and several barns has been mostly contained.

Oklahoma Department of Emergency Management spokeswoman Keli Cain tells The Oklahoman a large fire in Nowata County merged with one in Washington County.

Lenepah Fire Chief Doug Sondenberg says the fires were about 95 percent contained by 9:30 p.m. Wednesday. He says that in Nowata County, one house was destroyed, another was damaged and multiple barns burned down.

There were no immediate reports of injuries.

The American Red Cross set up a post in Lenepah to provide water and food to first responders.

Earlier in western Oklahoma, officials said a fire about near Woodward burned slightly more than 1 square mile.

Gusty winds that fanned the flames were also blamed for downing power lines during the afternoon.

In addition to Washington and Nowata, grass fires burned in Oklahoma, Lincoln, Pottawatomie counties.
