So let me see if I understand this. These folks had no place to live, as they chose to live in a flood zone without coverage and the government provided a roof over their heads. I fully understand that the trailers were probably not the best option but since when is it the governments responsibility to provide a roof over someone’s head at all. Last I checked the constitution there was not a right for a place to live.

I wish bad things never happened to anyone but to get aid when it does and then complain about what you receive is kind of like looking a gift horse in the mouth.

Bottom line is this folks, the government has a social insurance program for flood as the industry has traditionally not insured it and if you choose not to buy coverage then it is what it is. We all make choices in life and if you choose to live in a flood zone then you should expect to have floods occasionally.

I am very sorry for the folks in Louisiana but I do agree that if you decide to live in a “flood plain” you are responsible to replace your home not the government. At the least to purchase flood insurance provided by the government. On the other hand I believe that the rest of us have a responsibility to assist folks in LA in cleaning their homes and providing necessities. Many of the churches are asking for basics such as soap, gloves, masks, sponges, insect repellent; mold cleaners etc. I firmly believe that each of us can provide some of these items & help those who are able to repair their homes & get them ready to live in. All of that being said I do think it is time for a national conversation about folks living in flood plains & asking the rest of us to foot the bill when the rains come & rivers overflow. I understand this may seem like a two headed approach – I don’t think we can turn our backs on the folks in LA – on the other hand I think folks need to re-locate to areas not prone to flooding.
