This sounds like a case of “guilty until proven innocent.”

How many of those 14,000 have insurance due to a mix up in the VIN numbers and threw the letters away? How many of those deemed to have insurance are letting unauthorized family members drive (DUI husband, teens)? Cameras don’t pick that up. A woman in Missouri was put in handcuffs, and jailed because of faulty insurance verification. Her insurance agent was called, and verified she had insurance. They took the handcuffs off and let her out of jail. A legislator from Minnesota was sent a letter asking for insurance. He (Sen Senjem) sent back a notarized document from his insurance agent and the senator still got his driver’s license suspended. That was the end of the verification program in Minnesota. Google “Minnesota lawmakers target uninsured drivers”

I am surprised that an out-of-state insurance company was not required to participate in the verification program. Many states in the east have robust software programs that tie the VIN registrations with insurance company electronic submissions to make it harder to get around the requirement for insurance. I can only guess that these problems are due to state’s unwillingness to spend the money for a good platform. My opinion is that these problems are due to sloppy standards when adopting a verification system. In addition, they give you 30 days to respond so that no one can complain about being ignorant of the need to comply.

Auto insurance is a huge scam…. force everyone to have it simply because it causes revenue. Now, they have some East coast manufacturer making 85$ a pop for every uninsured motorist they capture on their cameras. And they have images of every motorist that was anywhere near them when they recorded… insured or not. They “say” they don’t keep any of the images etc., but yeah…. who believes that?? It’s not about safety… it’s not about anything other than making money for the state of Oklahoma…. oh, and some for a Boston company too.. oh, and state vehicles are exempt from the system…

I do not agree with them.. Having someone drive around all day to snap pictures of unsuspecting motorist license plates. So you can send a threatning letter with the fine of 175.00.. Im pretty sure if they had an xtra 175 to throw at the state of Oklahoma they would have insurance. Oklahoma is so greedy and corrupt whith there fines and taxes. I am so tired of the government trying to be the boss of everything,

Wow. I just got a notice of violation stating I don’t have insurance on my car. The car in the photo is mine, but it’s been insured since 2 days after I bought it, and it’s never not been insured since then. It really pisses me off that someone snapped a photo to see I had insurance. Guilty until proven innocent. Now I have to take time off from work to prove I had insurance. Are they going to compensate me for their mistake?

This actually punishes the law-abiding citizens. I have been hit twice from motorists that do not have insurance. Guess what? I had to pay to get my truck repaired. My insurance company said they would “go after” the parties that hit me, but they don’t because it is too costly to try and get any money out of them. What good is insurance then? Do you think those that purposely don’t get insurance are gonna pay the $174? Do you think they care if their license is revoked? No.
