Fla. Nationwide Insurance Office Robbed, Woman Set on Fire Dies

December 21, 2007

One of the women set on fire during the robbery of an insurance office in Lake Wales, Fla., last week has died, authorities said.

The death of 26-year-old Yvonne Bustamante at an Orlando hospital Tuesday night brings to four the number of killings that sheriff’s officials say can be attributed to a crime spree by a 30-year-old Winter Haven man.

Leon Davis Jr. is accused of dousing Bustamante and her sister-in-law, Juanita “Jane” Luciano, 23, with gasoline and setting them on fire during a robbery of a Nationwide insurance office Dec. 13. Luciano was 5 1/2 months pregnant and her baby, delivered prematurely after the attack, died Saturday. She is in critical condition.

Davis is also accused of shooting a man who came to their aid, but he was treated at a hospital and released.

Polk County sheriff’s officials say Davis is also a suspect in the Dec. 7 execution-style slayings of two employees of a BP gas station in Lake Alfred. Charges are pending.

Bustamante was born and raised in Texas and moved to Lake Wales about 15 years ago. She had two children, ages 8 and 4.

Davis is in jail without bond on a total of 23 charges so far, according to jail records, which did not indicate whether he has an attorney.
