Roane County, Tennessee commissioners have approved the creation of a county fire department.
The 15-0 vote June 9 in Kingston, Tenn. cleared the way for county officials to set up an organization that will coordinate efforts of five volunteer fire departments in rural areas of the county west of Knoxville.
Roane County Executive Mike Farmer praised the volunteer units and said the county-wide effort will help them get better access to water to fight fires.
County fire operations director Shawn Fox said insurance premiums should be cheaper under one contract and training standards will be uniform.
