The Paducah, Ky. City Commission agreed in principle to rent dump trucks to haul away debris from Hurricane Ike’s September windstorm.
Even if the extra trucks are used, the cleanup is expected to last into next year.
The Paducah Sun reported Public Works Director Earnie Via told commissioners Tuesday it would take eight months to cart away the debris at the current rate, using city-owned trucks.
Via said the estimate doesn’t include brush and debris still in alleys and people’s back yards.
He hopes the Federal Emergency Management Agency will reimburse some of the several hundred thousand dollars the city has already spent removing debris.
The Sept. 14 storm was triggered by the remnants of Hurricane Ike and swept up the Ohio Valley.
