The former chief of the New Sight Volunteer Fire Department has been charged with embezzlement.
District Attorney Dee Bates told the Brookhaven Daily Leader that 37-year-old Mike Boyd was being held in the Lincoln County Jail on $100,000 bond after his arrest earlier this week.
Bates said a criminal affidavit alleges Boyd had been taking funds from the department since from 2006 until November last year, when county officials noticed the fire department’s records were either missing or inaccurate. Officials say the money in question was a mixture of tax dollars generated through the department’s small property tax levy and from the department’s insurance premium rebate fund.
Boyd is charged with embezzling more than $500.
