The University of North Alabama is among a small but growing number of colleges that contact parents if their children get nabbed for underage drinking.
Kim Greenway, director of judicial affairs and student affairs at UNA, says underage drinking is among the most frequent violations at North Alabama.
She says most parents are thankful and want to know details once they are notified by the school. She says students tend to react differently, though. Some just cry.
Virginia Tech and the University of Albany in New York have started telling parents when underage students violate school conduct codes.
Greenway said it’s something North Alabama has been doing for more than a decade since federal law was loosened on notifying parents about student violations.
