One rarely gets the full story, but a little basic investigation turned up the following, showing that Wilmington bought their way out of a court case. Guess their attorneys aren’t on staff.

    * Williams allegedly drove through a DWI checkpoint almost running over an officer and leading police on a chase through the northern part of the county.

    * Williams has been in trouble since the incident. It was discovered he had outstanding charges of attempted murder in South Carolina after allegedly trying to avoid a traffic stop there two years ago, while trying to hit three officers with his car.

You just cannot lock up some people fast enough. Had he been tasered, the lawsuit would have been framed differently, but to the same conclusion.

Those are all salient points and definitely useful in helping to understand what was going on with this person, and what the cop’s were likely to believe about that man during the stop. Thank you for finding that out and posting it here – it makes a big difference in trying to understand why events unfolded as they did in this case.

That said, while the specifics leading up to the action being litigated aren’t fully known to us (such as: did he refuse to exit the car and yell that he’d hurt the officers) in my gut, I still feel the whole “pushing a police dog through the driver side window at the driver” seems excessive.

Agreed, r. Seems excessive to me, too, but at least it was a non-lethal method of immobilization.
